To all whom t may concern):
Be itrlrnown that I, JOSEPH EARENT, a citizenof the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, Statev of IvIiSsOuri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cabinets,of .which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to cabinets, and its object is to provide a cabinethaving a series of compartments and a4 slidable shelf in each compartment arranged to support a box, case, or drawer, which may be removed for any desired purpose. Suitable guides and stops are provided in combination with the shelves' whereby they may be retained in proper adjustment, and prevented from becoming detached. Y
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises various improved features of construction and arrangment, one Vembodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings,`in which- Figure l is perspective view of a cabinet constructed in accordance with my inventien, showing one shelf and the supported box or case in outside or open position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View, showing two shelves, one of which is in closed position and the other of which is in open adjustment. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4:. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, taken approximately on the line 1r-t of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, illustrating one of the guides employed to hold the shelves in position, and the stop carried thereby which limits the outward movement of the shelf.
The cabinet comprises side, top and bottom walls, forming a case or cabinet, which is divided into upper and lower compartments by a horizontal partition l. Both the upper and the lower compartments are divided into smaller compartments by metallic partitions 2, extending from the front to the rear of the cabinet, and having their front ends connected to a vertical strip 8, and their rear ends to horizontal strips 4. The partitions 2 are composed, preferably, of strips of sheet metal, bent double, and having'their edges resting upon the bottom or partitions below them. Guide strips 5 are secured to the opposite sides of the partitions 2, and corresponding strips 6 are secured to the side walls of the cabinet. Sections 7 of sheet metal protect the inner and under sides of the strips 6" and the inner surfaces of the side walls and partitions below-the said strips 6, (see Fig.
1n each compartment formed by the partitions 2, a sliding shelf S operates, said shelf extending under the guide strips 5 and 6. Across the rear or inner end of each Vshelf rod 9 is secured, said rod strengtheni'ng and re-inforcing the shelf, which may be of thin wood, and preventing the shelf from bending, warping or becoming cracked. The rod 9 is between the strips G and constitutes abutments to rub against the metallic surfaces of said strips and preventing the edges of the wood from rubbing against the sides of the compartment and becoming unduly worn by frequent use. Thin extensions 10 of the rods 9 project under the strips G and prevent the shelf from rubbing against the under side of said strips, which is of particular importance when the shelf is drawn out and supports the box or container as hereinafter described. Screws 11 extend through the strips 6 and project downwardly into the path of the extensions 10 and constitute stops to limit the outward movement of the shelf. Each shelf is provided on its outer end with a knob l2 for manual engagement in moving the shelf into or out of the cabinet.
Upon each shelf are secured four retaining devices each of which comprises a base portion 13, and an angular flange 141-. The side and end flanges 14, respectively, are in alinement so that the box 15 may be placed in the inclosure formed thereby (see Fig. l). The box 15 is provided with a top 16, which is hinged to the box at its inner or rear end or side. The arrangement of the shelf is such that the box will be moved beyond the front side of the cabinet so that the cover or top of the box may be raised and retained in open adjustment so to afford convenient access to the interior of the box and the contents thereof. lt is preferable that the box be provided with a transparent front as shown at 17, so that the contents may be viewed without opening the box.
rPhe cabinet constructed in accordance .with the foregoing description is of great convenience in stores, and constitutes avery convenient and attractive cabinet for containing and exhibiting merchandise. The boxes may be removed from one section or portion of the cabinet to another, and may even be replaced by others. The retaining devices 13-14, whereby the boxes are held in position upon the shelves, may also be removed and placed in different adjustments, should it be desired to support boxes of different sizes in the cabinet.
l/V hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is*- A cabinet comprising a case, sheet metal plates attached to opposite sides of said case, inward horizontal extensions on said plates, vertical extensions on the inner edges of said horizontal extensions, a shelf within said case having its edges below said hori- Zontal extensions of said plates, a rod rigid with the upper side of said shelf near the inner extremity thereof having its ends arranged to rub against the vertical extensions of Vsaid plates effectively to prevent abutments extending downwardly from the horizontal extensions of said plates and adapted to be engaged by said lateral extensions of said rod to limit outward movement of said shelf, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
