Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. WILLIAMS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHOW-GAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,873, dated August 15, 1882.
Application filed May 27, 1882.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. WILLIAMS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Show-Gases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to certain improvements in show-cases, more especially adapted for grocers use, for holding tea, coffee, crackers, &c. 5 and it consists of a frame set upon casters, and formed with inclined shelves for supporting in inclined position the boxes in which the goods are held, suitable glass covers being provided for closing the boxes. The boxes are divided into compartments by adjustable and removable partitions. The covers are rubber-packed and hinged to the edges'of the top and the inclined shelves, and jointed braces or supports are provided for holding the covers in opened position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in bot-h the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved show-case; and Fig. 2 is adetailed sectional elevation, showing the construction of the show-case.
The frame of the show-case is composed of the side boards or uprights, (m, the horizontal top shelf, a, and the series of inclined shelves d d. The side pieces, a a, are fitted upon the foot-pieces b b, which are provided with the casters 6 0. Upon the shelf 0 is secured the glass box or case A, and between and upon the inclined shelves d d are placed the boxes B B.
These boxes are divided into compartments by the adjustable and removable partitions f f. O 0 are the glass covers for the boxes B B, which covers are hinged to the edges of the inclined shelves and the top shelf, 0, as shown in the drawings. Secured to the under side of the frame got the covers in which the glass is held is the strip of rubber h, as shown in Fig. 2, which comes upon the edges of the boxes B B when the covers are closed, and forms a dust-proof joint between the cover and the box and cushions the covers, so that there will be no danger of breaking the glass from any jar in closing the covers. D D represent the jointed braces or supports, which are attached at one end to the end of the covers and at the other end to one of the uprights a, in suitable recesses formed in the uprights, as
(No model.)
shown in Fig. 1. When the covers are opened these braces will straighten out, as shown at D, and support the covers in opened position. In order to close the covers it is only necessary to give the braces a slight stroke with the hand backward, which will cause the braces to fold backward and let the cover drop, as will be clearly understood from Fig. 1. The inclined shelves d are formed with the lips or projections d! at their back edges for holding the boxes B B in place upon the shelves, as shown in Fig.2.
In use any goods desired may be placed in the case A, where they will be well and advantageously exhibited, and this box or case is an ornamental and useful show-case as a whole. Theinclined boxesB B may be filled with avarictyof goods, which will bewellexhibitedthrough the glass covers, and always be kept free from dust and flies by the covers 0 O, and by means of the adjustable partitions f f the size of the compartments in each box may be varied according to the quantity of goods to be placed in them.
Upon the outside of the uprights a are secured the handles i, by means of which the case may be moved from place to place upon I herein shown and described, consisting of the frame composed of the-uprights a a, inclined shelves at (1, covers 0 O, and the jointed braces D D, the shelves being adapted to hold the boxes B B, as set forth.
2. In a show case, the covers 0 0, provided with the strips of rubber h, in combination with the shelves 0 d, and the jointed braces or supports D D for holding the covers open and letting them drop by a slightstroke upon the brace, as set forth.
ROBERT S. WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
H. A. WEST, (J. SEDewIox.
