Description
L. COLE. .CombinedPict'ure Frame and Packing Box.
No. 214,105. Patented April 8,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS COLE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED PICTURE-FRAME AND PACKING-BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 214,105, dated April 8, 1879; application filed February 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS COLE, of the city of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Photographic Easel and Fancy Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new manufacture which will serve the twofold purpose of a photograph-easel and a fancy box for stationery, confectioneries, &c.; and consists in providing the slide at the back of the easel with an ornamental box, the edges of which are provided with flanges, which engage with grooves upon the back of the photograph-frame, by means of which the two are readily attached to and detached from each other, the said frame or easel serving the purpose of an ordinary sliding cover, by which the box is closed, all of which is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal transverse section. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation, with the frame partially withdrawn from the box.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference represent like parts.
A represents a frame, of the ordinary construction, provided with a sight-opening, such as are used for mirrors, photographs, and other pictures, for all of which purposes my device is equally well adapted.
The back of the frame is provided with grooves B B, for the reception of the flanges C C upon the side of the box D. The back of the box is provided with a supporting bracket or brace, E, of the ordinary construction, which is hinged to the back of the box in the ordinary manner. Thus, when the box and frame are attached together, they are inclined backward upon the brace, when the frame is supported like an ordinary photographic easel, and from a front view the box is entirely obscured from sight. The brace or support E serves as a suitable and convenient device for withdrawing the box from the frame.
It is obvious that the uses to which the box may be put are numerous, it being equally appropriate as a receptacle for cards, jewelry, candy, stationery, and other fancy articles.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim as my invention the frame A or box D; neither do I confine or limit myself to the peculiar device, consisting of flanges or grooves, by which they are connected together, as a variety of other common and well-known devices may be substituted therefor; but
What I do claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the box D, provided with brace E, in combination with the frame A, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS COLE.
