THEODORE G. WALPUSKI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SILVER OR CUTLERY CHEST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,493, dated July 10, 1900. Application filed January 18, 1900. Serial No. 1,864. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE G. VAL- PUSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silver or Cutlery Chests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved chest for the storage of silver, cutlery, and other articles in a convenient manner, so that a large number of articles can be stored and also displayed in an attractive manner.
The invention consists of a silver and cutlery chestwhich comprises a box provided with angular front corner-pieces hinged to the side walls, a bottom provided with means for retaining the silver or other articles, a hinged covering-tray and a hinged cover for the box provided with one or more trays, and means for holding them in position in said cover, the side and rear walls, bottom tray, covering-tray, and cover-trays being provided with means for supporting the silver, cutlery, or other articles intended to be stored in or displayed by the chest.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved silver and cutlery chest. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical. transverse section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of my improved chest shown entirely open so as to exhibit the articles stored therein, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical transverse section of the cover of the chest with its removable trays.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bottom, B the side walls, and O the cover, of my improved chest for storing silver, cutlery, &c. The front wall is centrally divided and made detachable from the bottom, the sections of the front being connected with portions of the side walls, so as to form angular front doors or corner-pieces D, which are hinged at d to the remaining rear portions of the side walls, so that the angular front doors may be swung on the hinges d in outward direction, as shown in Fig. 3, or in inward position, in which case the rabbeted edges of the front sections of the angular doors D are made to overlap and are connected together (Not' necessary to be shown.) The bottom A has a ;raised tray (1, which is provided with loops or by means of a suitable locking device.
devices, such as Ct, for supporting a number of articles of silver, cutlery, &c. To the front edge of the raised bottom tray a is hinged by- ,a metallic, flexible, or other hinge connection h a covering-tray A, which is made in the nature of a box-tray, so as to cover the bot-= tom tray (1 when folded over the same. "To the box-tray'A maybe hinged one or more additional trays,if desired. When the hinged box-tray A is folded outwardly, it is sup ported in line with the bottom A of the chest, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The coveringtray A, is like the bottom tray, provided with suitable fastening devices a for supporting the silver or other articles. The inner surfaces of the rear 'wall, the stationary side walls, and hinged angular front doors D are covered with any suitable material and provided with supporting devices (1 d for the silver articles and cutlery.
The cover 0 is hinged to the rear wall of the chest and provided with one or more trays E E, which are provided with means for supporting silver or other articles in the same manner as the other walls. The trays are supported in the chest by means of parallel grooves 0, arranged in the front wall of the cover, and by means'of locking devices 6, that are pivoted to the rear wall of the cover and adapted to hold the opposite end of the tray E firmly in the cover, so that the same canbe opened or closed without permitting the detaching of the trays E E. W'hen the trays are to be removed, the pivoted retainin g devices 6 are turned in forward direction, so that each tray, which is provided with a suitable loop 0 at its front, can be bodilylifted out of the cover, if desired, so that access is given to the rear tray, which can likewise be resupporting devices-such as are used in chests for storing silver, cutlery, and the like-heretofore in use.
The inner surface of the trays against which the diiferent articles are supported are padded, while the trays of the cover or lid 0 are not flanged like trays usually, but are in the nature of padded flat boards or plates, which impart a finish to the interior of the cover and give the impression that they are a part of the cover itself.
\ The advantages of my improved chest are ethat seven dozens of articles or more can be stored in the chest-namely, one dozen on the bottom tray, a second dozen on the coveringtray, a third dozen along the rear wall, a fourth and fifth dozen along thehinged front corner-pieces, and two additional dozens in thetrays ofthe cover. The chest can be readily opened, so as to exhibit all the silver or other articles in the same, and quickly closed by folding the covering-tray inwardly over the bottom tray and bringing the hinged front corner-pieces and cover in closed position, said angular front doors, as well as the cover, being closed by a suitable block.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A chest for storing silver, cutlery or other articles, consisting of a bottom tray, a hinged and forwardly-swinging covering-tray for the bottom tray, a stationary rear wall, stationary side walls, hinged angular front doors formed of the remaining side and front portions, and a hinged cover, the diflferent trays, and the interior surfaces of the chestwalls and cover being provided with means for supporting the articles, substantially as set forth.
2. A chest for storing silver, cutlery or other articles, consisting of a bottom tray, a hinged and forwardly-swinging covering-tray for the bottom tray, a stationary rear wall, stationary side walls, hinged angular front doors, formed of the remaining side and front portions, a hinged cover, and detachable trays arranged in said cover, the different trays and the interior surfaces of the chest-walls being provided with means for supporting the articles, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THEO. G. WALPUSKI.
