UNTTED STATES PATENT @Frioit.
GUSTAVE SCHWAB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE SOHWAB MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SUPPORT FOR ALBUMS OR OTHER OBJECTS SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,903, dated March 12, 190i. Application filed October 20, 1900. serial No. 33,775. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE SOHWAB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan borough, New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supports for Albums or other Objects, of which 'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a support which, while it can be readily set up in the form of an easel, can also be readily dismounted or packed in flat or compact shape for shipping or storing; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a support embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a face'view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the support dismounted.
In the drawings is shown an easel or easelsupport composed of a back a and a drawer or box removable from the back that is to say, the shell I) of the drawer is removable, the drawer proper or sliding part 0 being in said shell. The back a is of suitable form, closed work or skeleton, and the entire device of desired shape and material and plain or ornamented, as may be called for. The back a is shown with an opening or seat d, and when the box or receptacle 1) is slipped or seated in this opening, the back resting on its lower edge and the box resting on its rear lower edge, the back is held at a tilt or at what might be called easel positionor inclination. This detachable drawer thus performs a dual function as abox or receptacle and also as a support for the back. When the drawer is detached from the back or drawn out of its seat d, the back and drawer can be laid or packed flat or in compact manner, Fig. 3. The out (1 is shown in Fig. 2 with its upper edge or part thereof arched or cutaway, which out can form a passage, for example, to allow a projection or key 6 to pass, as in case a music-box or the like is contained in the drawer b; but of course these details do not aifect the invention, and the shape or ornamentation of passage 01 can be varied as called for. r
In an example made the rearwardly-extended drawer b was provided with a ledge f, and the ledge being ornamented or covered in conformity with the back a or its face and the front wall of the drawer part or slide 6 gave the whole a neat and salable appearance. This ledgefis of practical use, as it can form a shoulder or stop, which, striking an edge part of or being arrested at opening d, will enable the drawer to be readily inserted into the back to the proper extent.
The easelorbackacan serveasasupportfor an object -as, for example, a mirror, picture, or other article. In practice this easel has been applied to swingingly support an album to the ledge f, so that when the front cover of the album opens and swings down, followed successively by the album-leaves, the
album-back rests oris supported on this ledge or shelf f or on the drawer b.
The drawer can serve as a receptacle for various objects-as, for example, pictures, brushes, and other articles.
Thealbum can of course be ornamented or given an appearance as called for by the easel, and the detachable or separable fastenings or hinges h 1) enable the album to be taken from the easel to be laid flat, as for inspection or when to be packed, shipped, or stored. The
example shown in the drawings was one having the face of back a and the face of the front of drawer c, as also the ledgefand album 9, covered or ornamented with plush; but of course the ornamentation can be varied without departing from the invention.
In place of a ledge fany other suitable projection or stop can be employed for securing proper position of the drawer relative to the seat 01 or back a.
A handle or hanger k can be secured or hinged to back a if thought desirable.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a support for albums and the like, a back provided with a, suitable opening, a receptacle extending through said opening for supporting the back at an inclination and provided with a, drawer, a Wedge-shaped ledge mounted upon said receptacle, forming a stop I therefor, and a support for the album or the like, and a hook carried by said back for engagement with the album or the like.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing IO witnesses.
GUSTAVE SOI-IWAB.
