DESK APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1913.
Application filed January 19, 1912. Serial No. 672,117.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL MELLO, a citizen of Portugal, residing at New Bedford, in the county of New Bedford and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Desk Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to desk fixtures and has for its object to provide an easel picture frame having many novel and useful features.
It is customary for many persons to keep upon their desks photographs of some one dear to them which thus become practically an essential of their desk equipment. As there is ordinarily not much room upon the desk to spare for such objects it is an object of the invention to provide a picture frame and easel adapted to perform the functions of articles indispensable to stationery equipment.
It is a further object to adapt the frame to hold and conceal a mirror, whereby the mirror may be used at will although the frame appears only to carry a picture.
A further object is to provide a pen point holder and wiper holder of novel type adapted to be carried by the easel frame in a novel manner.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and from the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device, Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, Fig. 8 is a vertical section therethrough, Fig. 4 is a section longitudinally through the pen point holder, Fig. 5 is a front view showing the picture frame open.
There is illustrated a frame element 10, having the enlarged base 11 extending forwardly from the lower part of the frame. The base is recessed on its rear side and an easel leg 12 is pivoted inthe recess, being adapted to be disposed entirely therewithin at times, and movable rearwardly to bear upon a supporting surface to hold the frame in erect position. The base is also recessed suitably on its front'face to receive a drawer 13, and on its upper surface before the frame is provided with a suitable recess 14 having ink wells of ordinary form set therein.
Attached to the rear side of the frame and extending from near its top to a point adjacent its lower end, there is an envelop attached to the frame. The frame and con tents thus cooperate with the sheet material to form a box of which the front side is formed by the frame and contents. The frameis in two movable sections, the rear major portion A of which is provided with a rectangular rabbeted opening 16 in which there is set in the customary manner a mirror 17, set back from the forward surface of the said major portion. The border of this portion A may be ornamented in any suitable manner, and pivoted centrally of one side thereof for upward and lateral pivotal movement over the face of the portion A, there is a picture section B conforming to the shape of the major portion, or certain contours of the ornamentation thereof adjacent the mirror, so that at times it may be disposed in symmetrical relation to the major portion over the mirror but movable on its pivot to expose the mirror as desired. The picture section thus moves in a plane parallel to that of the major portion. It is checked at opposite limits of its movement by inconspicuous small steel pins 18 and 19, the former being concealed by the contacting portion of the picture section when the latter is in closed position, and the second pin engaging the picture section when in fully open position, when it is inverted. The picture section is in the form of a simple rectangular frame with an opening of similar form rabbeted on the inner or back side to receive a photograph or the like, secured in any customary manner. The picture section is provided at each side with ornamental knobs in harmony with the ornamentation of the frame, one of which is provided with a pivot pin 20 engaged revolubly in the frame, while the other knob serves as a handle for moving the picture section when desired.
Referring to Figs. 1, 3, and 1, at each side of the base there are pen racks 21 of usual form, and above these, at each front corner, there are ornamented bracket arms 22 extending upwardly and outwardly laterally from the base, and having pintles 23 carrying respectively a pen-wiper box and a pen box 25, each of similar form, having removable covers. The boxes each comprise a body portion 26 and cover 27 having axial knobs 2 1 and 24' on the bottom and top respectively, the knobs 24 each having a recess therein adapted for snug engagement on the pintles.
In Figs. 2 and 5 there are shown two brackets 22 at each side, with a clear space between and having alined recesses or notches 23 on their upper sides in which may be set trunnion knobs 24L of modified pen point and wiper holders 25 at respective sides of the device. Each holder is in the form of a circular cup 26 and loosely fitting cap 27, the bottom of the cup and the top of the cap being spherical and each provided with the axial knobs 24 before mentioned, which serve as handles and also as supporting trunnions. It should be noted that the top and bottom when coengaged are adapted to fit snugly between the bracket arms, so that the holders are held securely in closed condition by being positioned on the brackets. The sides of the cap and cup may be inclined inward from their junction in a frusto-conical shape, so that when the device is set down elsewhere than onthe brackets, by reason of the loose fit of the cap, the two parts will separate; and also by inclining the inner sides of the cup, as dotted in Fig. 4, the contents will be discharged therefrom under action of gravity should the holder be carelessly laid down elsewhere than on its proper support.
It will be seen that an ornamental picture frame is provided, carrying a plurality of inter-dependent and cooperative devices,
contributing to assist a, writer and facilitate his work. The frame is thus made to perform a nu mber o i functions heretofore requiring separate elements. At the same time an ornamental fixture is incorporated in such a way that the functions of the various elements are not interfered with, and the space of one only is occupied.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a receptacle device comprising a cup and a cap loosely engageable, )rojections on each to prevent the receptacle from being set stably upon a surface, and .a support element having portions adapted to receive the receptacle therein against separation of the cup and cap and retention of the receptacle against loose movement.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of areceptacle comprising a cup and cap loosely fitting together for separation under relative longitudinal movement, knobs formed centrally on the bottom of the cup and top of the cap respectively, a rack including parallel arms spaced to receive the receptacle snugly therebetween on a horizontal axis and recesses in the arms to receive the knobs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
