To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, FRANZ Lrsr, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and a resident of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented Vcertain new and useful improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

' The invention pertains more particularly to paper or board boxes in which merchandisev may be conveniently shipped and which are adapted to be converted into proper display boxes to be placed on a counter, shelf or the like for exhibiting the goods that may be contained in the boxes. The box will comprise two main parts, to-wit, a body portion and a lid or cover, and these two parts will be so connected together that the cover will not become lost from the body of the box and in addition may be employed as a prop at the rear end of the body of the box for holding said body in an inclined or display position. Thesides of the cover of the box are provided with slots of special conformation, and the rear end of the body of the box is provided with studs extending through said slots in the cover and having heads which are of greater diameter than the slots and prevent the cover from becomin detached from the body of the box.

llhe invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the ace companying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance'with and embodying the invention, the cover of the box being shown in its prop-position and the body of the box in its inclined display position;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box with the parts thereof shown in closed position;

Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, on a larger scale than Fig. 1, of the box with the parts thereof shown in position for displaying the contents of the box;

Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section corresponding with Fig. 3 showing the parts of the box in closed position;

Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a portion of the box, taken on the dotted lines 5 5 of Fig. 4, and

Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the box and illustrates a slight modification in the for-` mation of the guiding slots in the cover of the box.

In the drawings, 10 designates the body of the box and 11 the cover therefor. The body 10 comprises sides 12 and ends 13, and said sides near their upper rear portions are provided with studs 14, each comprising a shank 15 extending-through a hole in the side 12, inner members 16 extending laterally from said shank to aid in retaining the stud in said hole and an outer head 17. The specific formation of the studs 14 is that of a shank having a smooth head on its outer end and a split inner end which, after the stud has been applied to position, may have its members spread apart, after the nature of a paper fastener, as shown in Fig. 5 whereby to hold the stud in place. The body 10 is not of special novel formation or construction, except to the extent that at its upper rear corner portions, the sides thereof being equipped with the studs 14.

The cover 11 has a top 18, side flanges 19, rear end flange 20 and, preferably, a. front end flange 21, said flanges being adapted to pass downwardly upon the sides and ends of the body portion l0 when the box is to be closed. The front flange 21 of the cover is less in depth than the rear flange 20 and side flanges 19, and said side flanges 19 from about their lower middle portions incline upwardly and outwardly to the lower edge of the iiange 21 as shown, this being a preferred construction adapting the box as a whole for use in displaying its contents upon a shelf, counter or the like.

In the side flanges 19 of the cover 11 are formed slots 22 which are located in the upper portion of the side flanges 19 and at the rear of the vertical transverse center thereof. The slots 22 are closed at both ends and extend longitudinally of the flanges 19 and preferably these slots will be substantially horizontal, except at their front ends at which they curve forwardly and downwardly, as at 23, and then slightly rearwardly at their front terminal ends, as at 24, for the purpose thereat of forming seats for the shanks of the studs 14 when the box is in the display position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

When the box is in its display position, the body of the box will stand at an inclination, as shown, and the cover of the box will serve as a prop to support the rear end of the body portion. The narrow front flange 21 of the cover portion and the inclined front portions of the side anges 19 add to to its prop-position by a slight upward movement of the front end of said cover and' then giving the cover a sliding action rearwardly7 with the slots 22 riding along thev studs la and then giving the box cover an angular motion on said studs and finally moving' the cover until the seats 9.4 at the front ends of the slots 22 receive and afford a support for the studs 14. The seats 24 are so located on the sides of the cover as to give the body portion l0 a suitable inclination for exposing` its contents when the box is at rest on a counter or the like.

The box shown in Fig. 6 corresponds exactly with the boxes shown in Figs. l to 5 inclusive, with the exception that the guide slots 30 in the sides of the cover incline downwardly and forwardly and have a slight upward inclination at their rear ends, as at 31, so that the rear end of the box may first be tilted upwardly to a slight extent on the studs before the front end of the coveris raised to release the same from the body of the box, the purpose being to facilitate the turning of the coverinto its open prop-position without obstruction from the front 'iange of the cover. I prefer however the construction shown in Figs. l to 5 inclusive, since with a proper disposition of the parts of the box I find no-difliculty while opening` the box in releasing the front flange 2l of the cover from the body of the box. The presence of the front flange 2l is preferable, especially when the box is in closed condition, since it aids in excluding dust and the like from' the box. The front flange 2l also adds to the appearance of theJr box and increases the rigidity of the cover thereof. v

I do not limit my invention to any special mechanical construction of the studs 14,

since obviously said studs may be variously constructed in accordance with the will or desire of the manufacturer. Nor do :I broadly claim a box having a body portion and a cover connected together by studs or rivets extending through slots formed therein whereby the relationy of the fcover and body portion may be adjusted to meet certain conditions. My invention has reference more particularly to a special construction adapting the box body to be heldin an inclined display posit-ion on a shelf'or counter, without the cover of the box unduly obstructing the View about the box or ap# pearing to extend upwardly to Aan undue height above the rear end of the body of theA box.

That I claim as myv invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. A merchandise display box comprising a body-portion and a co-extensive top'cover adapted to close the same, said body-portionhaving studs secured to its sides and said -top cover having slots in the rearpon tionl of its sides receiving the projecting portions of said studs and extending longi tudinally 0f said sidesandat their forward ends affording seats for said studsywith said body-portion supported in a downwardly and forwardly inclined display position and said cover standing in a substantially vertical prop-position.

2. A merchandise display box comprising a body-portion anda co-extensive top cover adapted to close the same, said body-portion having studs' secured to its sides andV said top cover having slots in the upper rear portions of its sides receiving the projecting portions of said studs and extending longitudinally of said sides and at'their for-v ward ends curving laterally and then slightly rearwardly and aifording seats for said studs with said body-portion supported 4in a downwardly and forwardly inclined display position and said cover standing in a substantiallyk vertical prop-position.
