J. W. BLA'GKLEDGE.
SHOW OASE. No.. 405,003. Patented June 11, 1889.
WNES'SES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN IV. BLAOKLEDGE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.`
SHOW-CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,003, dated June 11, 1889.
Application led'Iebruary 5 1889. Serial No. 298,736. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concerm Be it known that I, JOHN W. BLACKLEDGE, a citizen of the United States, residingv at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in various improvements in the construction and arrange ment of parts of a show-case, whereby a case is produced which is especially adapted for use in exhibiting small waressuch as grocery samples, small dry and fancy goods, dac.- in a manner convenient to view, easy of access, and at the same time secure from dust and dirt, wherein different goods are contained in separate compartments without the use of other receptacles, and each compartment may be opened without disturbing the others, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying.' drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspecti ve view of a showcase embodying` said invention; Fig. 2 a vertical section through the same on the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 3; Fig. 3,3. cross-section on the dotted lines 3 3 inFig. 2, and Fig. 4, a detail view similar to a portion of Fig. 2, illustrating a modiiied form of one of the parts.
In said drawings, the portion marked A represents the frame of the case; B, the drawers or compartments, and C the locking device.
The frame A consists of a rectangular top and bottom connected by four posts, one being situated midway between the corners of each side. It is formed of the size desired and preferably provided with casters or trucks a on its bottom.
The drawers B are formed of a size to .tit
into the corners of the frame between the vertical posts, and are formed with two sides exposed to View when in positiomwhich sides are preferably formed of glass b, as indicated in the drawings. One corner of each of said drawers, which rests against one of the posts of the frame, is formed with an enlarged portion, in which a vertical hole is provided, and through which a pivot-rod B' is extended fromv the top to the bottom of the case. Between the bottom of each drawer and the top of the next one below it is interposedv a washer b',
which serves to support the drawers free from one another and receive the wear consequentl from the swinging of them in and out. These pivots are preferably arranged on opposite sides of the frame, the pivot of one tier of drawers being in the corner adjacent to the corner in which is the pivot of the other tier ou the same side of the frame, as indicated in the drawings. They are thus arranged so that two tiers of drawers close against opposite sides ofthe same post, where they are secured by a spring-catch b2. On the inside corner of each drawer is secured an eye b3, which projects out therefrom toward the center of the device.
Instead of forming the corners of the drawers in which the pivot-rod is mounted enlarged, a metal bracket may be inserted, provided with suitable bearings in its topand bottom portions, as indicated in Fig. 4. In said gure said bracket is shown upon the inside of the drawer; but, as will be readily understood, it might be placed on the outside, if preferred, without altering the construction.
The locking device C consists of a post pivoted centrally in the top and bottom of said frame, and having a hook c secured in each side thereof at intervals throughout its length in such a position that one will .engage with each eye 3 on the corner of the drawers when turned to the proper position, as indicated most plainly in Fig. 3. To the top of said post is secured a lever O, extending out to the edge of the device in a position convenient to be reached, where a lock of any'suitable construction is provided to secure it in locked position. The bottom of said post C is extended through the bottom of the frame to form a journal or pivot c', which engages with a suitable bearing provided in the counter or table on which the device is to be mounted, thus permitting it to be revolved when in use.
The use of my said invention is as follows: The several tiers of drawers being arranged in the frame upon the pivot-rods B', as described, the goods to be exhibited are placed therein in such quantities as may be desired IOO and the drawers swung into place, where they are held and kept closed by means of the catches b2, as before described. Through the glass sides of said drawers the goods are exposed to view, and when it is desired to have access to any drawer in the ease the catch thereof is released and the drawer swung out, as indicated in Fig. l, which is done without disturbing any of the other drawers. Vhen it is desired that the case shall be locked, the lever C is swung to the position shown in Fig. 1, which engages the several catches c upon the rod C with the eyes 'b3 on each drawer and locks them all with one operation, the lever being secured in this position by means of any convenient form of lock, as indicated in said Fig. l.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a show-case, the combination of the frame A, having' the vertical post arranged midway of each side thereof, the tiers of drawers severally arranged in the corners of said frame, the pivot-rods B', extending through one corner of each of said tiers, and the means, substantially as described, for securing said drawers in position.
2. In a show-case, the combination of the frame A, the tiers of drawers B, pivoted therein, each drawer being provided with an eye on its inner corner, the rod C, pivoted centrally in said frame and provided with a catch arranged to engage with each of said eyes, a lever on the top of said rod, and a lock for securing said lever in position, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this lst day of February, A. D. 1889.
JOHN W. BLACKLEDGE. [L s] Nitnessesz E. W. BRADFORD, C. W. Il. BROWN.
