J. WATSON.
1 DOMESTIC 011311.
110. 449,432.. Patented Mar. 31, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES IVAISON, OF MARINETTE, IVISCONSIN.
DOMESTIC OVEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,432, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed June 7, 1890- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WATSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at- Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Domestic Ovens or Box Bakers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in what are known as domestic ovens or box bakers, adapted to be placed adjacent to a fire and bake by reflecting the heat from the fire, and is especially designed as an improvement uponthe oven or baker for which I obtained Letters Patent on the 27th day of May, 187 9, bearing the number 216,003.
The object of this invention is the production of a more simple and cheaper oven or baker than heretofore produced.
A further object is the provision of an oven or baker which is thoroughly efficient for the intended purpose, and which is compact, whereby it may be easily transported. V
The invention consists in the oven or baker substantially as herein illustrated, described, and specifically pointed out by the appended claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved oven in position for use. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the same closed or in its normal position. Fig. 3 represents a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Myimproved box baker or oven consists of the upper rectangular part or section A and thelower rectangular part or section A, which are similar in size and shape, and which when closed form an oblong fiat box, and these sections are bent over at their meeting edges to receive re-enforcin g or strengthening wires B, and the lower section at the back carries the fiat hinges O, which pass around the wire B of the upper section, which upper section is cut out at D to allow this passage. It will be seen from this construction that the sections are hinged neatly together, and to secure the sections in closed position I provide the upper section with eyes E to receive the hooks I carried by the lower section and pivoted on raised portions G of said lower section to bring the hooks in proper line with the eyes. On the under face of the lower section, at the Serial No. 354,561. (No model.)
rear thereof, I hinge the plate H, which forms a restfor the oven when in use, and in order to securethe rest when not in use I employ the turn-button K, as will be readily understood. To the lower section, on the inside and at each end thereof, I hinge the leaves or plates L, having the rearwardly-inclined up- .per edges L to receive and support the upper section as a cover when the oven is in use, and the front inclined edges L to allow the upper section to rest on the leaves. These leaves are provided with the hinged cleats M, on which is supported the pan N, in which the material to be baked is placed, and is further provided with the raised portions G, having openings G to receive the hooks F carried by the lower section for securing the leaves in a vertical position, and on the outer in g the oven from place to place without closing it, as is evident.
The manner of using my improved oven will be readily understood from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings, and I will simply state that it is merely necessary when it is desired to use the oven to adjust the rest, raise the upper section, and secure the leaves on which thepan is supported and place the open front of the oven or baker near the fire, and in a short time the baking will be effected in a perfect and rapid manner. lVhen the oven is not required for use, shut the leaves, place the pan thereon, secure the rest, and close the upperseetion or lid, and the oven can be easily and expeditiously transported.
My improved baker or oven is especially adapted for the use of river-drivers, cruisers, camping parties, and, in fact, all persons who spend considerable time outdoors, as well for use in the household, as it possesses all the desired features in a device of this character, extreme simplicity and durability, compactness and lightness, cheapness, and thorough efficiency.
I claim as my invention- -1. A box baker or domestic oven consisting of the similar rectangular hinged sections, the leaves hinged at their lower edges to the lower section having their upper edges inclined to support the upper section, the raised portions on the outer faces of the leaves, the fastensides of the leaves are the bails H for carry-- ings engaging said raised portions to retain position and for securing the upper section them in a vertical position, and the cleats when the sectionsarc closecLthe cleats hinged hinged to the inner faces of the leaves for on the inner faces of the leaves, and thepan supporting a pan, substantially as described. supported on the leaves. I5 5 2. A box baker or domestic oven consisting In testimony whereof Iaffix inysignat-ure in of the similarrectangular hinged sections, the 1 presence of two witnesses. leaves having the lower straight edge hinged I JAMES VATSON to the lower section inside the rim thereof, and the upper inclined edge for supporting Titnesses: IO the upper section, the fastenings on thelower B.
