Application filed July 8, 1915.1 Serial No. 38,705.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JArnw S. TANVBUREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oven-Doors; andI do declare the following .to be a full, clear.
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use: the same.
" My invention relates broadly to improvemerits in stoves, and more particularly to j oven doorsfor cooking stoves.
The object of the invention is to provide a door of this class with a lunged lining which may be opened when it is'necessary to gain access to the inside of the door for any reason, but which when .closed, constitutes a shelf for the support of pans or the like drawn outwardly from the oven when the door is swung downwardly. I
l/Vith this object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination hereinafter described and claimed. In descr1b1ng the invent on,
"I shall refer to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters des1gnate corresponding partsthroughout the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is an inner side view ofan oven door constructed in accordance with my in- "vention, the lining plate being closed; Fig. :2 is a similar view with said lining plate opened; Fig. 3 is a vertical section as seen along the plane indicated by the l1ne3''3 f of F ig. 1; the door being-shown in closed position; Fig. 4 is a similar view with the door in open position, and indicating the 40 lining plate opened in dotted lines; Fig' 5 is a vertical section as seen on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 4-; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one corner of the doorz-and, Fig. 7 is a similar view of one of the hinge members.
In these drawings which constitute a part of the application, the dotted lines 0 indicate the oven of a cook stovewhich is provided with thedoor D wherein resides the gist of the present invention.
The door D comprises a normally upright front plate 1 of'rectangular or other preferred formation, provided on its surround ing edge with a flange 2 extending rearwardly toward the oven 0, the lower portion of thisflange being shown in the present embodiment of the invention as provided w th hinge studs?) adapted forco action with eyes or the likecarried by the stove and designated by the dotted lines E. On the inner side of the plate at the intermediate portion thereof, is C-shaped flange 4; which surrounds the thermometer and to which said thermometer; is secured by stove bolts or the like 6. Directly beneath the thermometer 5, anddisposed slidably' SpecificationofLettersPatent. Y yaa t d p ps gajqa upon the inner side of the front plate 1, is
an appropriate type of damper 7 having an operatmghandle 8 disposed in front of said plate. One or more stovebolts' 9 slidably secure the damper 7 in position upon the plate 1, whereby said damper may be removed whennecessary for repairing or the When the door D is swung downwardly to the positlon shown in F 1g. 4,the'edge of the flange 2 is adapted to be disposed in linewith the bottom of the oven U, thus allowing pans and the like removed from the oven to'be supported upon the door. Here'tofore, it has been the common practice to so secure a lining plate to the door as to allow "this plate to receive the utensils removed from the oven. This construction has been found to operate to advantage until repairing of the damper or thermometer-is neces sary or until the interior parts of the door D need cleaning. It is then of course necessary to remove the lining plate, but the bolts or the like ,securingthe same in place have usually become so rusted asto prevent this from being readily accomplished. It there fore becomes highly expedient to provide simple and efficient means whereby the lining plate will remain in closed position under ordinary circumstances, and whereby it may be readily swung outwardly when desired for gaining access to the inner side of the door proper for the purposes above suggested. To this end, the lining plate 10 is provided, such lining beingsurrounded by the flange 2, disposed flush with the edge thereof, and hinged at its upper edge thereto. The-plate 10 may be of any preferred formation, but it is preferably of openwork design such as shown in the drawings. in which the plate in question is shown as having a solid central portion 10*, a plurality of slats or the like l0 formed integrally therewith and radiating therefrom, and appropriate ribs 10 to which the intermediate portions of said slats are secured;
The ends of the slats 10 rising from the central portion 10 are shown'as formed integrally with a hinge rod 11 which is disposed, directly beneath the upper portion of the flange 2 and which is confined in this position by Lshaped hinge members 12 having depending attaching feet 13 disposed in contact with and bolted at lt to the upper portion of the plate 1. lhe upper ends of the feet 13 abut lugs 15 which are cast integrally with the upper edge portion of the aforesaid plate 1, while the sides and lower ends of said feet are inserted between trios of lugs 16 which are likewise formed integrally with and project inwardly from the plate 1. In addition to the lugs 15 and 16 for preventing movement of the members 12, the upper ends of the latter are preferably notched as at 17, said notches receiving ribs 18 which are formed on the lower side of the upper portion of the flange 2 by the unique disposition. of parts above described, although the construction is very simple, and effective and inexpensive hinge is provided.
It is to be observed that the lining plate 10 is hinged at its upper edge to the upper edge of the door D, whereas the lower edge of the latter is hinged to the oven 0, this being essential since no means is necessary to retain the plate 10 in active position when the door D is closed.
In order to efl'ectively support the plate 10 when the door is swung to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 4, a plurality of projections 19 is preferably formed on the inner side of the flange 2, said projections receiving thereon the plate 10 as clearly shown in several figures of the drawings. The projections in question may be of any desired shape, but they are preferably in the form of ribs extending transversely of the flange 2 whereby the same is reinforced thereby.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying dravvings, it will be evident that although co1nparatively simple construction has been pro vided for carrying out the object of the in vention, the complete door will be very eflicient in operation and will possess a number of advantageous features.
In the drawings certain specific details of construction have been illustrated for producing probably the best results and in the preceding such details have been described, but it will be evident I need not be limited thereto otherwise than to the extent to which the appended claims restrict me.
I claim:
1. In combination, an oven door having hinge means on its lower edge, and a lining plate hinged to the rear side of said door at the upper edge thereof.
2. An oven door comprising a front plate having a rearwardly extending surrounding flange, a flat lining plate surrounded by the rear edge portion of said flange and disposed flush with the rear edge thereof and means hingedly connecting the flange and the lining plate.
bearing on said projections.
4. An oven door comprising an upright front plate having a continuous flange extending rearwardly from its edge, a plurality of transverse ribs formed integrally with the inner side of said flange and terminating at points spaced forwardly from the rear edge thereof, and a hinged lining plate surrounded by the rear edge portion of said flange, disposed flush with the edge thereof, and bearing against the rear ends of said ribs. 7
5. An oven door comprising a front plate having a continuous flange extending rearwardly from its edge, a lining plate surrounded by the rear edge-portion of said flange and including a hinge bar disposed adjacent a portion of said flange, and l.- shaped hinge members receiving in the angles thereof the hinge bar, and having attaching feet secured to the front plate.
6. An oven door comprising a front plate having a continuous flange extending rearwardly from its edge, a lining plate surrounded by the rear edge portion of said flange and including a hinge bar disposed adjacent a portion of said flange, L-shaped hinge members receiving in the angles thereof the hinge rod, attaching feet formed on said hinge members and secured to the front plate, and spaced lugs formed integrally with said front plate and abutting the edges of the feet.
lin testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
