Description
W1 A. KING. Shelf for Cooking-Stoves.
No. 199,555. Patented Jan. 22,1878.
91 I Invenor,
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WALTER Af nve, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SH EI VES FOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,555, dated J annary 22, 1878; application filed June 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER A. KING, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shelves for Cook- Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention has for its object the production of a self-sustained shelf for a cook-stove, to be applied as a panel at any desired point, and capable of being let down to a horizontal position to receive various utensils required while cooking.
Heretofore such shelves have been formed from the doors of the cooking-stoves but such construction is objectionable, for the ma son that when said doors were let down to form shelves they would allow the ovens to cool, or open the draft, and otherwise interfere' with the objects designed to be attained from the stove, which defects are designed to be overcome by my invention, which consists in making a shelf to be attached by trunnions at its lower corners and a detent at its top, which will fit closely to the closed sides or ends of the stove when not in use, and which can be ornamented as a panel in any suitable manner; and, further, which, when necessary, can be let down to a horizontal position and be sustained by brackets or legs cast upon it, as will be herein set forth.
The accompanying figure represents a front elevation of a cook-stove provided with my improved shelf.
A and B represent the shelf, which may be of any approved shape or design. Its lower corners have cast with it laterally-projecting trunnions a, that are pivoted in bearing-ears I) cast upon the stove, as shown.
When not in use, the shelf fits closely to the side of the stove, as at A, and forms a panel that may be ornamented as desired. It is held up by a detent or catch, 0, of any suitable construction. I
When required for use, it is let down, as at B, and is held in a horizontalpositiou by lugs or brackets d, which may either be cast upon the stove or upon the lower edge of the shelf.
The shelves may be applied in any convenient manner to any part of the stove, and to render them ornamental they may serve as panels. 7 v
I am aware that it is not new to apply a detachable shelf to a cook-stove on a level with its top surface, and also that cooking-stoves are provided with doors which can be let down to form shelves; and such Ido not desire to claim as my invention; but
What I do claim is- The combination, with the closed side or end plate of a stove, of a shelf hinged or pivoted at its corners to the stove, and provided with a detent or catch, 0, and bracket d, whereby it can be let down and sustained in a horizontal position without interfering with the objects designed to be attained by the stove, substantially as specified.
Witness my hand this 1st day of June, A.
