Be it known that I, WVILLARD J. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVeyauwega, in the county of \Vaupacca and State of isconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Ovens, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an oven formed of sheet metal for use in the ash pit of a sitting room heating stove, the ash pan being removed and the oven inserted in its place, the oven consisting of a bottom, two ends, and a back, all being properly secured together, and a cover slidingly mounted upon the ends of the oven, the front being open, and thereby making the article being baked, upon the opening of the ash pit door, visible to a limited extent, and easily accessible, the object of the improvement being for using the heat of a heating stove for baking purposes and thereby saving the cost and trouble of an extra fire in a cooking stove many times for doing the family baking. My invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,--

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the oven. Fig. 2 is a plan of the oven cover when it it turned bottom side up. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the front edge of the oven cover. Fig. t is an elevation showing the front end of the oven with a modified form of cover. Fig. 5 is a top, or plan view of a part of a sitting room heating stove below the line a, a, of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the lower part of a sitting room heating stove upon the line b, I), of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section of the even, looking toward the right on Fig. 1.

1, indicates the complete oven; 2, its bottom; 3 its ends and lits back, the back being narrower than the ends to any desired extent; The numeral 4 in Fig. i is connected by a leader line above it, leading to a horizontal line just under the cover of the oven, which horizontal line is the upper edge of the oven back, the space between said line and the cover being open, and may be as wide as desired, and the bottom, ends and back are formed of one piece, suitably bent and riveted together or otherwise fastened.

The upper edge of the ends may be provided with a flange 5, as in Fig. 4, or have a wire 6, inserted and the upper edge of the sheet turned over the wire for stiffening the ends and for providing a stiller flange, 5, than the flange 5, for guiding the cover in its sliding movement over the oven.

The cover 7, is formed of a sheet of metal and should have its ends bent downward at a right angle and then bent at a right angle backward toward the sheet, the extreme end of the sheet being left parallel with the body of the cover and forming recesses by means of the inclosing lips 8, for receiving the flange 5 or 5, (as the case may be), of the oven ends.

For stiffening the cover when it is made of a thin metal, and also for assisting in guiding the cover in its sliding movement over the oven, a wire 9, is bound to the front and rear edges of the sheet by turning the metal of the cover over the wire along its front and. rear and soldering the wire to the cover across its ends. 1f the cover is made of sulliciently thick metal, this wire may be dispensed with. Intermediate the ends of the front edge of the cover, the wire when used, is bent outward from a straight line for forming a handle 10, by means of which the cover may be pulled forward or pushed backward. Upon the bottom of the oven, an car 11, is secured, by means of which the oven may be pulled out of the ash pit, this ear being formed in a well known manner with. a bent wire and a sheet metal .holder, 12, the holder being riveted, or otherwise fastened to the oven bottom. Upon covers not having the wire from which to form the handle 10, an ear 13, similar to the ear 11, may be attached to it.

llandles 14 are secured to the oven ends for lifting and moving the oven, and brackets 15 secured upon the inside of the ends for supporting a grate and dividing the even into upper and lower compartments.

16, indicates the lower part of a sitting room heating stove,supported upon legs 17, it having an ash pit 18 supported upon ribs 19, the ribs having openings 20, through which currents of hot air may pass and circulate around the ash pit. 2]., indicates the fire pot, 22, the drum or outer shell of the upper part of the stove and 23, the ash pit door, hinged preferably so as to swing downward, but not necessarily so.

Other methods of arranging the cover for sliding from front to rear of the oven than those herein shown I consider as within the scope of my invention. I am aware that portable ovens are not new, but I am not aware that one has been invented that is adapted for use in the ash pit of a sitting room heating stove, or in any part of such a stove having one of its sides open.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. In a portable oven, consisting of a bottom, two ends, and a back, a cover therefor arranged for sliding forward and backward upon the oven ends, consisting of a sheet of metal having a wire around the same upon its lower side for stiffening said sheet, and for guiding the cover in its sliding movement across the oven, substantially as described.

2. In a portable oven, consisting of a bottom, two ends, and a back, a cover therefor arranged for sliding forward and backward upon the oven ends, consisting of a sheet of by the operator for sliding said cover, formed of said wire by bending it outward from the I sheet, substantially as set forth.

3. A portable oven adapted for use in the ash pit of a sitting room heating stove, consisting of a bottom, two ends, a top and a back, all properly secured together, the latter part extending from one side of the oven to the other and from the bottom only part way to the top, and. the front of the oven being entirely open.
