GAS BROILING APPARATUS FOR STOVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,091, dated January 1, 1901. Application filed August 15, 1900. Serial No. 26,944. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMENZO GRIFFITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Springfield,in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Broiling Apparatus for Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in gas broiling apparatus for use more especially in conjunction with ranges and stoves.
The object of the invention is to provide a gas broiling apparatus having capability for properly subjecting the meat or other article of food to the broiling action of the gasburner, having capability for withdrawing the article in the broiler away from the gasburner for inspecting or turning the same, for insuring the retention of the juices or drippings, not only for saving the same, but also for the purposes of cleanliness in the broiling apparatus, for the avoidance of odors from broiling in the kitchen or room, and generally for convenience and utility, as will be mani fest from an understanding of the constructions hereinafter described.
The invention consists in a broiling apparatus having constructions, arrangements, and
combinations of parts, all substantially as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the broiling apparatus with the door or vertical cover thereof swung down and showing a broiler or gridiron and pan supported thereby. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the broiling apparatus as taken from front to rear on about line 2 2, Fig.1, the door supporting the pan and gridiron being shown as in the vertical closed position.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
In the drawings, A represents the top 0 the stove or range, having the back plate or wall B extending above the top.
0 represents the broiling apparatus, shown as in the form of a rectangular box or chamwhich leads the supply pipe or conduit (1 for the gas and air and having the forwardlygas to be burned forwardly in front of the said burner D, which has considerable superficial area.
The rear walla of the broiling oven or chamber has the rearwardly-extending lugs ff,-
whereby said rear wall a stands separated from the upstanding vertical wall B of the stove proper, so that an air-space f is provided to the rear of the broiling-oven, and inasmuch as the bottom of the broiling-oven is located somewhat above the top plateAof the stove an air-entrancespace f is afforded, as
indicated in Fig. 2, and passages g for air lead through the back wallof the oven and through the burner opening into the oven-chamber at the front of the burner. Openings g also lead air from space f into the bottom of the broil ing-oven.
' A sectional construction of the burner D is shown in Fig. 2, wherein the back wall g? of. the burner has perforations g therethrough and is matched with the edge wall 9 surrounding and rearwardly extending from the edge of the front section giland said frontsection is provided with the tubular studs g extending through the aforementioned perforations 9 in the rear Wall or section'g and also beyond said rear burner-Wall through properly-matching perforations in the rear wall of the broiling-chamber.
The pipe E leads from an upper part of the chamber 0 into the smoke-pipe F, and hrepresents a damper in the pipe E, having the operating-handle k to be operated externally of the broiling-oven.
The door or front cover 0 for closing the broiling-chamber at the front has at its lower or rear portions, near its hinge-connected edge, the transversely-extending lug or ledge opening jet-holes e, through which issues the 7 t', which is provided with the hook-likelug exl back through and into the front of the flatholtensions j j, the same being extended, as the closing door is viewed in its vertical position of Fig. 2, inwardly and upwardly, so that the return-bent extremities of the said members j are at a sufficient distance to the rear of and substantially parallel with the door 0 for the reception of the widened bottom or rear portion L of the independent pan J. The pan, as clearly shown in the drawings,has the lower or inner end portion thereof of a hooded form-that is, the height of the pan is increasedand it has a wall opposite and more or less nearly parallel with the pan-bottom, forming a pocket for the reception of the juices or drippings from the meat being broiled when the broiling-oven door and pan are in their upright positions, as shown in Fig. 2.
M represents the broiler, and for the accommodation of the wires in, constituting the rectangular handle thereof, the top wall I) of the broiling-oven has the apertures n n,whereby the door 0 may be completely closed without obstruction by the broiler-handle.
Preparatory to the broiling in the improved apparatus the gas is turned on at the cock 0 for passage into the pipe 1) and the airanixer q to the burner D. The pan J being set in place with its inner or lower hooded or troughshaped end portion at rest against the ledge i and within the hook-lugs j j and the meat to be broiled placed within the broiler M and set in the pan, the door 0 is closed, carrying the parts to the dispositions shown in Fig. 2, the article of food to be broiled being in front of and suitably adjacent the broad gas-burner, and by swinging down the door occasionally the progress of the broiling may be inspected and the broileran d its contents may be turned as the proper cooking thereof renders requisite.
The hook-like extension-lugs j j prevent the pan when in a vertical position from sliding or slipping unduly inwardly and also steadies the pan and renders more certain of proper disposition and that of the broiler relatively to the burner without the exercise of care on the part of the person using the broiling-oven.
The construction is such that the drippings will all be caught in the trough-like end portion of the pan, whereby they will not only be saved for utilization, but will also prevent the broiling-oven from becoming fouled thereby.
The simplicity of the construction is one of its merits, it especially being seen that the oven and its door involve no forms or con structions which are not readily accessible for cleaning should occasion therefor arise.
Provisions for ample air-supply within the oven-chamber are insured by reason of the location of the oven relatively to the stove top and back, as shown in Fig. 2, with the passages g and passages g leading from the low burner, which has the gas-jets or burnerholes 6.
The smoke and gases incidental to the employment of the oven for broiling are carried to the chimney by way of connection-pipe E and stovepipe F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. In a gas broiling apparatus, an open-front broiling-oven having therein a gas-burner, and gas-supplying means therefor; a door hinged at its lower edge to the lower front.

Ina gas broiling. apparatus, in combination an open front broiling oven having therein a gas-burner, a door hinged at its lower edge to the lower front portion of the oven, and adapted to be swung open as described and provided near its hinged lower edge with the ledge "i, the pan J provided within the door having at its lower edge the upwardly-opening hood-like portion 7i: supported on said ledge, and the broiler adapted to be set in the pan, substantially as described.
3. In a gas broiling apparatus in combination an open-front broiling-oven having a gas-burner therein, the door hinged at its lower edge to the oven front and provided with the ledge 'i and the inwardly and return bent lugs or hooks j, the pan J having the upwardly-open trough-like or hooded lower portion resting on said ledge i and embraced by said parts j, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a gas broiling apparatus in combination an open-front broiling-oven having a gas-burner therein and having the recesses n in its top edge, the door hinged at its lower edge to the oven front and provided with the ledge iand the inwardly and return bent lugs or books j, the pan J having the upwardlyopen trough-like or hooded lower portion resting on said ledgez'and embraced by said parts j, and the broiler M the extension-handle of which is disposed within said recesses it upon the closing of the door, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5.
