Description
UNITE STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES H. MITCHELL, OF SAN FRANCISOO,CAL1FORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-RANGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,728, dated J one 10, 1873; application filed February 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. MITcHELL, of San Francisco city and county, State of Cali fornia, have invented Improvements in Cooking-Ranges; and I do .hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly is had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of my range. Fig. 2 is a plan view, with a portion of the top removed.
The front plate A of the stove or range is removable, and the ovens B B are secured to it so that by taking away the front plate the ovens will also be removed, so that they can be repaired when necessary, without resorting to the present plan of tearing down the range to get at the ovens. A ledge, C, at the back of the range has its front upper edge rabbeted, as shown, and the rear lower edge of the ovens fits in the rabbeted edge so as to be supported at the proper height from the bottom of the range. The front plate can be secured in place by screws or by other suitable fastenings. The upper inside edges 11 of the back plate, and two ends of the range, are beveled outward, as shown, and the rim- ,plate E rests upon the top of the outer edge so as to leave a beveled recess just below. A water-pipe, j, which is first coiled in the fireplace in, the usual way, is led around the range in this recess so'as to protect the rim-plates from the efiects of the heat. Faucets can be attached to this pipe at different points, so that hot water can be drawn when desired.
The inside edges of the rim-plate E are rab-' beted, and the range-cover is made in sections 9 g, the side edges of which are also rabbeted to correspond with the rim-plates, so that they will fit down and form an even surface. By I constructing the top of therange in sections I gain the advantage that when one of the sections becomes cracked or broken it can readily \be removed at a small expense, whereas, as formerly constructed, in a single piece,
the entire top has to be renewed when it is cracked in any portion. Brackets I I I' are secured vertically tothe rear portion of the I rim-plate E and extend upward to the desired height, where they support a horizontal skeleton or perforated shelf, J, which serves as a shelf upon which dishes and other articles can be placed in order to keep the cooked victuals warm. The hinges which secure the doors K to the front plate A are constructed as follows:
The pintle or stud 0 is cast on the projecting arm 1', and the socket-pieces, which is attached to the door, fits down upon the stud, thus providing a convenient hinge. By this means 3 ovens B B, in combination with a range having the supporting-ledge O, substantially as and v for the purpose above described.
2. The beveled edges d of the back and side plates, in combination with the waterpipe f and rim-plates or frame E, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
