UNITED STATES Patented December 8, 1903.
ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF HORSESHOE, NEW YORK.
AND IRON FOR FIR EPLACES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 746,539, dated December 8, 11903.
Application filed December 2, 1902. Serial No. 133,540. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABBOT AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Andirons for Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention is an improvement upon the structure shown and described in my concurrent application, Serial No. 129,358, filed October 31, 1902, in which the andirons are united by lateral members and support a fuel basket or grate between them.
The improvement is designed to provide for the convenient heating or cooking of substances between the andirons; and the invention consists, essentially, in an adjustable and removable shelf or gridiron supported upon a series of projections or shoulders on the inner sides of the andiron-standards, as hereinafter described, and claimed specifically.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved andiron; Fig. 2, a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 an end elevation thereof. Fig. 4 isa front ele vation with the gridiron removed; Fig. 5, a top view showing the T-bar in place, and Fig. 6 a sectional elevation upon plane of line 6 6, Fig. 5.
A A represent the andirons, united by the transverse members or rods a a.
Bis the open-work fuel-basket,formed with the flanges b b, which rest in the Ways a a formed on the inner sides of the andiron-up rights. The functions of this suspended grate or fuel-basketB are fully set forth in my concurrent application hercinbefore referred to.
a a are lugs or shoulders formed upon the inner sides of the andiron-uprights to afforda series of horizontal supports for the removable gridironor shelf 0, which is preferably formed with a series of slots or openings 0 c to expose articles placed upon the gridiron or shelf 0 more directly to the heat of the incandescent fuel below. Any desired number of these removable gridirons or shelves may be provided, as may be found most expedient in adapting the device to various uses, and their-adjust ment with relation provided for by the series of shoulders a or, arranged at difierent heights.
irons by any suitable means, as by forming the brackets with longitudinal slots (1 01, through which pass set-screws d d, as shown in the drawings, or by any other mechanical expedient.
Each extension-bracket D is formed at its upper end with a loop or hook 03 d for the reception of the ends e e of a T-bar E, the middle member 6' of which fits in a semicircular notch or depressionfin one of the rear cross-bars, several of which latter may be provided. By this means when the gridiron O is not in actual use the extension-brackets may be raised to the proper level and the T- bar E put in position, so that its middle member 6 may be utilized as an arm or crane upon which to hang a pot, kettle, or other utensil above the fire-basket B.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with andirons united by transverse members and having lugs upon their adjacent faces, of brackets adjustable on the front standards of the andirons, and aremovable support mounted on said standards and one of the said transverse members.
, 2. The combination of andirons united by transverse members between the rear standards, extension-brackets adjustable upon the front standards, and a T-shaped cross-bar engaging the said extension-brackets in front and one of the transverse members at the rear for the purpose and substantially in the
