COMBINED ANDIMNS AND GRATE.
Specification ot Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915.
Application led October 28. 1914. Serial No. 888.671.
To all 1f/wm. it may com-ern Be it known that I, Anrnnn K. Winni-:nsrlx, citizen of the United States, residing at (ix-and Saline, in the county of Vanzant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined .\ndirons and (iratcs, of which the following is a specification.
` 'lhis invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined andirons and grates.
The object of the' invention is to provide a structure including apair of andirons and a coal grate so arranged that the andirons f may be used with or without t-he grate.
Another feature resides in an adjustable back whereby the depth of the fire box formed on the grate may be varied and a deep or shallow fire maintained.
Among other features are the provision of novel joints and connections; and the pro` vision of a swinging bracket for heating and cooking.
still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, eflicient. and comparatively simple and inexpensive to produce, also one in which the several parts will not be likely to get out of working order.
YV ith the above and other objects in view the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying,1r drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevation of a fire place showing my combined andirons and grate therein, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the andirons and grate, Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical scctional view taken on the line :r-ru of Fig. 1` Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line a-a of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is an isometrical View of component parts forming one of the joints, and Fig. 6 is a: detail of the back plate.
In the drawings the numerals 1 and '2 designate the front upright members of a pair of andirons which may be of an v.suitable design. Each member has an aperture Il near its base which receives the notched tenon 'l of a rea rwardly extending supporting bar 5 which has a leg 6 at its rear end. The bars may be detached from the members 1 and 2 and the andirons more conveniently packed and shipped. These parts form the andirons proper and are all that are required for burning wood. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 an apertured lug 7 is formed on the rear side of the upright member 1 ucar its upper end. A swinging bracket 8 is hinged in this lug and shaped to swing into and out of the fire place. In Fig. 3 the parts 'i and 8 are provided on the upright member L. showing that they may be used on either or both of said members. A kettle or other vessel may be placed on the bracket and swung` over the fire.
When itis desiredto burn coal a grate is provided. Each supporting bar 5 has a, grooved hanger 9 extending along its inner side adapted to receive one end of a grate har member 10, the latter having depending flanges 11 engaging in the hangers. A front grill panel 1'2 is mounted upright against the inner sides of the members 1 and 2 and has end posts 14 cast integral therewith. The panel 1Q has provision for holding it against longitudinal displacement, as the shoulder 15 shown in Fig. 5-
Each end post 14 has apertures 16 which receive the notched tenons 17 of side panels IS. the latter resting on the bars 5. The front panel 12 and side panels 18 extend above the grate bar member 10 and form a fire box over which the bracket 8 may be swung and in which coal may be burned. llarh side panel 18 has a depending lug 19 at its rear end which engages between the member 10 and leg 6 and holds said panel against displacement as will be seen.
back plate .20 is constructed to rest on the grate bar member IOand t between the side panels. This back plate is arranged to be adjusted toward and from the front panel 12 whereby the fire box may be made shallow or deep according to the fire desired. The plate has a pair of Offset depending lugs '1 on its rear side which engage between the grate bars while the plate rests on one of said bars as shown in Fig. 3. .The plate is disposed on incline and projects above the side panels. On each side panel a plurality of bosses' *22 are cast on the inside along the top edge and the back plate rests against a pair of these bosses. The spacing of the bosses gives the adjustment to the back plate. The back plate also has a pair of hooks 23, one at cach end, which engage over the side panels and prevent spreading of the latter.
It is apparent that when it is desired to convert the andirons into a grate. it is merely necessary to adjust the bars i the proper distance. apartJ` drop the member l() into nlace so that its flanges ll tit in the hangers then place the front panel In' and the side panel 157.3%,l andlinally fit in the back. plate '20 adjust 'tht-.Usame the required distance trom the front panelto give the dept-h ot' fire box desired. The parts may be as readily taken apart.
The' invention is presented as including such modifications and changes as properly come within the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim, is:
1. The combination with a pair of andirons including horizontal supporting bars, of a grate member removably mounted on the bars, a front panel removably mounted on the andirons and abutting the grate member, side panels removably mounted on the supporting bars, and a back plate resting on thefgrate member and connecting the side panels.
.2. The combination with a pair of andirons including supporting hars` of a. grate bar member engaging the said supporting bars, a front panel and side panels mounted on the member and bars, and a back plate resting on the'grate bar member andengaging the side panels, the side panels and back plate having provision for holding the back plate in adjusted positions with relation to the front panel.
3. The combination with a pair of andirons including supporting bars having hangers, of a grate bar member having projections engaging in the hangers of the bars. side panels resting on the bars, a front panel engaged by the side panels, a plurality of spaced bosses projecting from the sidepanels, and a back plate constructed to engage said bosses in adjusted positions.
4. The combination with a. pair of andirons including supporting bars, of a grate bar member engaging the bars, a front panel and side panels mounted on the member and bars, and a back plate having lugs engaging between the bars of the member and provided with hooks engaging over the edges of the side panels.
5. The combination with a. pair of andirons including horizontal supporting' bars, of a grate member removably mounted on the bars, a front panel removably mounted on the andirons and abutting the grate member, side panels removal'ily mounted on the bars, a back plate resting on the grate member and engaging and connecting the side plates at their rear portions, and means on the side panels for supporting the back plate in adjusted positions whereby the size of the lire space majy be varied.
ln testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
