CHARLES H. DUNTON, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
COOKING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 270,766, dated January 16, 1883. Application filed February 15, 1882.. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DUNTON,
of 0akland,'county of Alameda, State of Cali- :t'ornia, have invented an Improved Cooking- Stove; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to cooking-stoves, and to certain improvements therein consisting in the novel construction and location of a round fire-place with relation to the stove, and in the employment of a vertically-adjustable grate in the fire-place, together with a means for adjusting and holding the same, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my stove; Fig. 2, a top view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through line :0 :r. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through line 3 :0
Let A represent the main body of the stove, having an oven, B, and top provided with suitable holes, as shown.
In the front of the stove is located the fireplace D. This consists of a vertical cylindrical chamber, the base of which is just above the air or draft space and ash-pit 0 below, the entrances to which are the damper-holes E and the door of the ash-pit. The rear wall of the fire-chamber forms part of the front-wall of the oven, and the top of the fire-place is connected with the space a in the-top of the stove above the oven.
The partition M extends from the fire-place to the rear of the stove, and in height from the top of the oven to the top plate, as shown in Fig. 4. The partition also extends down at the rear end of the oven, so that the heat of the fire will pass over the top and down hehind and below the oven at one side of the partition, thence upon the other, and out the chimney. When it is not desired to pass the heat around the chimney the damper n is opened, permitting the heat to pass directly to the chimney.
Within the tire-place is a circular grate, G, journaled or pivoted to a suitable frame, F, the sides of which are provided with guide-flanges c, running in grooves in the walls of the fireplace. The grate is thus adapted to move up and down, and may also be reversed by swinging on its journal-shafts at any point where it may be in use between its lowest and highest point.
In order to raise the grate, I have the lever E. This extends, as shown in Fig. 1, outside the front and enters the ash-pit; thence turning back again, as in Fig. 4. and up through the fire-place to the bottom ofthe grate, to the frame of which it is attached by suitable arms. WVhen the outer end of the lever H is depressed it depresses its inner end and causes the grate to descend. When elevated it causes the grate to rise in the fire-place. A'vertical rack,- K, upon the front of the stove is engaged by the lever H, by which means it may be adjusted and the grate fixed at any desired height.
The fuel is dropped upon the grate through the top of the fire-place, and the products of combustion pass off through the top a and chamber 1).
' By having the grate vertically adjustable it may be supported at the bottom of the tireplace, so that a large quantity of fuel may be used; or it may be raised to a point near the top, so that but little fuel need be-used whenever required.
The heat from the fire-place acts upon the oven through its front wall, and also through the entire extent of its top, and at the same time is utilized for'cooking on top of the stove.
It is therefore well directed for the purpose, and the best result is accomplished with economy.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. In combination, the circular fire-place in the front of the stove, the vertically-adjustable grate, the crank-lever H, and the rack K on the outside of the stove, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the stove A, having an oven, B, top space, a, and chimney b, the vertical fire-place 1), as shown, and the grate G, said grate being rendered vertically adjustable by means of the sliding frame F, to which it is journaled, the lever H, and the rack K, arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
- In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
CHAS. H. DUNTON.
