Description

E. BUSSEY.
Cooking-Stoves.
N0.\57,789. Patented Dec. 15,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ESEK BUSSEY, OF TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHARLES A. MCLEOD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,789, dated December 15, 1874 application filed October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EsEK BUssEY, of Troy, county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Stoves.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specication, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired `to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that part of a stove which is termed the fire-box; and the nature thereof consists in the provision of an adjustable and movable plate or partition-strip, extending from the iront of the fire-box to the casing of the stove, whereby the draft is prevented from passing into the Vtire-box except through the bottom thereof, and a dead-air chamber is formed above the movable plate, and in front of thelire-box.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding `parts are designated by similar letters, Figure l is an elevation of the front of a cooking-stove having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section from front to rear, taken on the line :c a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the front part of the stove, illustrating the position of the movable plate when lowered.
Old and well-known parts of an ordinary diving-flue cooking-stove are designated as follows:
A is the front plate; B, the top plate; O, the oven; F, the fire-box, H, the grate under the re-box; K, the grate in front of the firebox; L, the projecting casing, to which are hinged the doors of the stove; M, the ue under the iire-box, through which the air ascends to the grate.
To a stove of this old and well-known construction I make certain additions and improvements, whereby the following important advantages are secured: First, a dead-air chamber is formed in front of the fire-box, which prevents the formation of clinkers and economizes fuel; second, the entire draft passes through the'grate on the bottom of the fire-box; third, a much higher degree of illumination is obtained in front of the firebox.
N designates an elongated plate or partition-strip, extending from the lire-box to the front of the project-ing casing L. lhis plate,
when made to assume a horizontal position, divides the nue-space below the fire-box from the space between the doors O and the front grate K, and forms a deadair chamber, S.
The plate is hinged to the front of the casing L in such a manner that it may be lowered at will, in order to allow the ashes which have accumulated thereon to drop into the ash-pit.
The plate is raised or lowered by means of the projecting .pin T, attached to the inner side of the door O, which engages with a camshaped projection, V, 011 the upper side of the plate.
When the door is closed the plate is forced upward, and made to assume a horizontal pc-r sition. When the door is opened the plate falls.
Having thus described my invention, l will indicate what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi' the United States in the following clauses-that is to say:
l. The movable plate, extending from the front of the fire-pot to the casing ot' the stove, which, when made to assume a horizontal position, forms a dead-air chamber, as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the following /elements: The grate in front of the tire-pot, the movable plate, and the door provided with mica lights, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination ot' the door provided with a projecting pin and the movable plate provided with a cam-shaped projection.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
ESEK BUSSEY.
