UNITED STA-res f 1C E r PATENT.
GRATE.
Application filed December 11,' 1922. Serial No. 606,111.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that MILTON W. RoLLINGs, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-lendersonville, in the count-y of Henderson and State of North Carolina, has invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Grates, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to coal and wood grates, particularly adapted for use in open fire places. a
The primary object of my invention is to provide a grate that comprises a number of sections that can be assembled andheld in a rigid position.
A further objectof my invention is to provide agrate of the above stated character having aremovable section centrally of the gate" that can be easily removed when is is desired toreinove clinkers, ashes, etc, from the grate. I
A still further Ob ec-t of my invention 7 is-to provide a' grate of this character with an ash pan positioned directly under the grate andsupported by the frame of said grate, thus providing means for keeping the hearth of the fire place in a clean con-- dition, free from ashes and H at the same time eliminating the extraeXpense of providing a bucket or other means for remov ing the ashes.
And a still furtherobject of my invention is to provide a grate ofthe above stated character, that can'be knocked down when not desired for use land can be folded in such a position as to be stored away in a relatively small space;
An additionalvobject of my invention is to provide a gratefof the above stated char acter in combination with an ash pan that is not only ornamental in. CleSlg11,. but one that is simple in construction, durable efficient for the'purpose intended and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects of my invention will be better understood as the descrip tion proceeds and as is specifically pointed out in the, appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and which clearly illustrates the construction of my invention,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the collapsible fire grate constructed in accordance with my invention.
Ifligure- 2 is a top plan view of same.
Figure 3 is an end or side elevation of same.
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on line -fld of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a section taken on line of Fig. 1.
Figure 6 is a section taken on line 66 of Fig.
Figure 7 is a section taken on line 77 as a whole will conform approximately to" the shape of a fire place and will extend all the way across the front of same. Each of the legs is provided with a ledge (3 to provide a support or slide guide for an ash pan 7 whichis provided on the front of same with a handle 8-.
A. grate 9 is supported by the rectangular frame 1 and is provided with an en larged opening centrally of same, adapted to support therein a circular grate member 10. The circular grate member 10 is provided with a series of lugs 11 which are adapted to be seated in recesses formed in predeterminedportions of the member 9. The circular grate 10 is provided with a ring 12 in which a hook or other tool may be inserted'when it is desired to re move said circular grate to permit ashes and clinkers which are too large to pass through the straight bars to be discharged through the opening occupied by the circular grate into the ash pan 7.
In order to prevent wood, coal or other fuel burning on the grate 9 from rolling or falling off of same, I have provided a fender formed in sections comprising a front screen 13, a rear screen 14 and end screens 15 and 16 respectively. The front screen 13 and the rear screen 1 1 rest directly in the frame 1, and are adapted to be supported in position by means of the end screens 15 and 16. The end screens 15 and 16 are each providedat the corner thereof with an L-shaped lug indicated by the numeral 17 and having formed integral on the end of' the L-shaped lug a ball 18. adapted tobe seated in a recess 19 formed in the frame 1 at each corner of same. The upperedge of the L-shaped lug tapers slightly upward from where it is formed with one of the sides 1501' 16 to the end of same, the purpose of which will be better understood r as the description of the invention proceeds.
The upper portion of the end screens 15 and 16;isformed with an extension 21 on each end, and on the "end of each extension is a lug or hook 22 which extends downwardly and locks the front screen 13 and each of the fi'ont and rear screens 13 and let respectively are provided with a recess 25, the front screen of which has the upper wall of the recess tapering slightly towards the rear, while the rear wall 14 has the upper screen of the recess 25 tapering slightly towards the-grate,so that when the front and rear screens 13 and 1 1 are placed on the frame 1, the side screens 15 and 16 are then placed in position and the upwardly V inclined edges of the L-shaped lug 17 en- 7 gages the inclined edges 26 of the front :and rear screens, which prevents outward movement of said last mentioned screens from the-bottom of the frame and as above stated the hooks 22 formed on the ends of the extension prevent the front and rear screens from moving outwardly at the top, while the tongues 23 prevent horizontal movement. of said screens.
From the foregoing description of my invention taken 111 connection with the accompanying drawing, it is'tho'ught that any further explanation as to the construction 50,
and objects of same are unnecessary.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I realize The extensions thatvarious minor changes may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, therefore, Ido not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to "the combination and arrangement of parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is j 1. In a device of the class described, a
frame, supporting legs therefor, a grate supported on said frame,an ash pan sup-Q ported below said grateya' fender removably supported on said frame comprising front and rear sections, and end sections,
lugs extending outwardly from the lower ends of said end sections and adapted to be seated in recesses provided in the upper portion of said frame, said lugs being further adapted to cooperate with openings formed 1n the lower ends of said front and rear sections respectively to prevent the outward movement of the latter sections, andlocking means associated with, the upper portions? of said end sect ons and said 'front and rear sections respectively for preventingjthe'out ward movement ofsaid end sect-ions.
2. In a device of the class described, in
combination, a frame, supportinglegs therefor, a grate removably i supported on said frame, an ash pan supported ins-aid frame below said grate, fender detachably support-ed o'n-said fi'ameccomprising front and rear sections,'and end sections, said end sect-ions having angular lugs extending outwardly from the lower-ends thereof, the lower free ends of said extensions adapted to be received in recesses provided in the corners of the upper faces of said frame,
said lugs beingfurther adapted'to cooperate with openings provided in the lower portions of saidffront and; rear sections respectively for locking the latter sectionsagainst lateral movement, extensions formed on the upper ends of said end sections, sub
stantially V-sh aped tongues formed'on the under faces of' said extensionsand adapted to fit in notcheslprovided therefor inthe upper portions ofsaid front and rear sections respectively for preventing thef'outward movement of said end sections.
i .In'testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
