AUXILIARY FIRE-GBATE FOR STOVES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, S'rnrI-IAN SOHAFFAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Fire-Grates for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in auxiliary fire grates for stoves.

The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment for stoves and especially for the fire-box of'cooking stoves whereby a small auxiliary grate is operatively positioned therein for use whenever it is found desirable to reduce the size of the combustion chamber.

A further object of the device is to provide an adjustable grate readily positioned upon the burning grate of a cook stove for positioning the fire entirely beneath a single griddle of the stove top, provision bein also made for directing the entire updraft of the stove grate through such adjustable grate thereby assisting the burning operation.

l/Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :'Figure 1 is.

WVhile the present arrangement of adjustable auxiliary fire grate may be employed in any form of stove provided with a burning grate, the same is especially adapted for employment with stoves designed for cooking purposes such as the cook stove 10 having the fire-box 11 arranged transversely at one end of the stove. The said fire-box is usually provided with a burning grate 12 providing an ash pit 13 therebeneath, while the chamber 14 above the grate serves as the combustion chamber, the stove top 15 having two cooking griddles 16 arranged thereabove with a division piece 17 between the said griddles.

A mounting wall 18 preferably formed of metal of slightly less width than that of the combustion chamber 141 is provided for positioning transversely of the said chamber being provided with a base flange or foot 19 for seating upon the stove grate 12.

Depending ribs 20 are provided upon the foot 19 for positioning between adjacent grate bars 21, the wall 18 being slightly inclined when operatively arranged upon the grate 12 and having a strut or leg 22 hinged to its rear side adjacent the top thereof as at 23, the said strut having a foot 24 at its lower end for resting upon the grate 12.and providedwvith a depending lug 25 positioned between adjacent bars of the said grate.

An auxiliary grate 26 preferably slightly arcuate in cross section is adapted for removable attachment to the forward side of the wall 18, by means of hookedmembers 27 projecting from one side of the auxiliary grate and adapted for reception through the desired set of perforations 28 with which the wall 18 is provided.

A stop or abutment flange 29 depends from the auxiliary grate 26 for engaging the forward face of the wall 18 when the grate is operatively positioned thereon, the

grate being thus detachably mounted upon the said wall in a substantially horizontal position, as best illustrated in Fig. 1 of the It will be noted that the auxiliary grate 26 is thus arranged beneath a single griddle 16 and the size or capacity of such auxiliary grate being less than the grate 12 of the stove, the attachment is serviceable when a 110 small fire is required, it being understood that the different adjustments of the grate 26 at different heights above the grate 12 as Well as the entire removal of the grate 26 from the wall 18 further provides for regu lating the quantity of fire or combustible material positionable beneath such cooking griddle. A deflector or draft plate 30 having opposite marginal flanges 31 may be flatly positioned upon the grate 12 between the feet 19 and 24 of the wall and strut respectively when desired to compel substantially all of the rip-draft to travel through that portion of the grate 12 which is positioned beneath the auxiliary grate thereby increasing the draft through the grate 2G and assisting the combustion of the material arranged thereon.

In Fig. 8, a modified form of the invention is set forth comprising a wall 18 arranged with perforations or slots 28 therethrough adapted for the reception of hooks 27, of an auxiliary burning grate 26, an abutment lug 29 being provided beneath the said grate. A foot 19 is pivotally attached to the lower edge of the wall 18, while a pivoted strut 22 of the said wall has a pivoted foot 24:, the feet 19 and 24 being adapted to position the wall 18 at adjusted inclinations upon a burning grate such as illustrated at 12 by dotted lines in Fig. 8.

A serviceable attachment is thus provided for a stove whereby the burning or grate capacity may be readily adjusted without altering in any manner any feature of the stove construction.

While the form of. the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

A stove attachment comprising a wall having a plurality of series of perforations therethrough, an auxiliary grate, hooks projecting from said grate, a stop flange depending from the said grate adjacent the said hooks, the said hooks being positioned through one of said series of perforations with the said flange engaging the said wall when the auxiliary grate is operatively posi tioned substantially horizontally, depending positioning ribs on the bottom of said wall, a supporting strut pivotally connected to the rear side of said wall adjacent the top thereof and a positioning lug upon the lower end of said strut.

2. A grate attachment comprising in com bination with a fire grate, a mounting wall positionable thereon, a pivoted supporting strut upon one side of the said wall, a draft deflecting plate removably positioned between the lower ends of the said wall. and

strut, and an auxiliary grate adjustablv attached to the other side of the said wall.
