To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO PAUL ELTERICH, of Newark, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Fire-Parting Fork for Stoves or Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to permit the ashes and cinders from the lower part of a bed of fire in a stove or furnace to be removed ro without removing the unburned coals and bright `fire above the ashes.
The invention consists in the novel combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, wherein- Figure l is a vertical cross-section on the plane of the line c c,Fig.2,showing a portion zo of a furnace and its fire-pot, my improved nre-parting fork being shown in position for supporting' the unburned coals in the lire, while the ashes beneath have been removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the fire-pot and the fork in position in the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved fire-parting fork.
In the drawings, the letterA represents the casing or frame-work of a suitable stove or 3o furnace, in which is hung a grate B. The grate B is shown pivoted at or near its ends and adapted to turn on said pivots, as indicatedby dotted lines, so as to deposit the ashes, &c., from the same upon the receptacle 3 5 b beneath it 5 but the grate B may be a sliding grate or of any other desired construction, whereby the ashes it supports may be deposited in a receptacle.
D is a re-pot above the grate B, and is 4o shown provided with a series of slot-s or apertures d. The lower end of the nre-pot D comes near the grate B, so that the ashes will be suitably supported within the same in the usual manner. The fire-pot D maybe of any desired construction, provided it has suitable openings d to permit the passage of my improved fork E across the fire-pot, as clearly indicated in Figs. l and 2. The fork E consists of a head e, from which project a num- 5o ber of prongs f. (See Fig. 3.) On the side of the head e opposite the prongs f are sockets g, that are adapted to receive lugs 7L, carried by a handle F, whereby the fork may be manipulated. By this construction the handle F may be removed from the fork when the fork is passed into the fire-pot D.
As shown in Fig. l, the casing A of the furnace is provided with a horizontal tube-like opening G, formed by two shelves or supports 71,7', into and through which opening the fork 6o E may be passed. The opening G is aligned with openings CZ in the {ire-pot D, and the fork E rests upon the lower shelf t, as indicated. The distance between the shelves 75j, or, in other words, the height of the opening G, is about the same as or slightly more than the height of the head e of the fork E, so that said head will have a free sliding movement within said opening, and so that the upper side of the head e will come against the shelf 7o j, while the under side of the prongs f and head e rest upon the shelf fr', thereby preventing the outer ends of the prongs f being depressed by the weight of the coals, the fork being entirely supported by the head ein the opening G. The head e closes the opening G to prevent the passage of dust. The sockets g are so arranged on the head e as to permit the lugs h to be withdrawn from the same by a downward and outward movement when the SO fork is in the opening G, as indicated in Fig. l.
Z is the door of the furnace, which may be of suitable construction and provided with an opening m to permit a key or the like to be inserted to operate the grate B. The door Z may also be provided with an opening n, that may be covered by a hinged latch or flap o, so that the fork E may be passed into the furnace and through said opening without opening the door Z, and so that the handle F may be removed from the fork and the opening n closed to prevent dust, &c., passing out through said opening. y
ln using my improved fork l proceed as fol` lows: I pass the fork E into the furnace 0r 95 stove through the opening G, so that its pron gs f will pass through the openings CZ in the iirepot D, and also pass through the bed of coals or ashes in the fire-pot, so as to separate the contents of the fire-potI into two parts. I next loo remove the handle F and close the flap o, whereupon l turn the grate B upon its pivots,
or otherwise remove the grate from beneath the cinders and ashes, whereupon said einders and ashes will be deposited upon the receptaele I) or elsewhere, While the fork E sustains the coals and iire above the fork, an open space being' left beneath the fork, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The grateB is now returned to its proper position and the fork Withdrawn from the fire-pot, whereupon Jche coals, fire, the., will pass down'inpon the `trate and continue to burn with new vigor, like a fresh fire, free from einders and ashes. The doorl need not extend up as far as the opening' G, in which ease the ilap owill be attached directly to the casing A.
Having non described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination of a stovecasing having a tire-pob provided with side openings and a horizontal tube-like opening G, with a fork adapted to pass through said opening Jl, and having a head that fits Within said opening; and which is supported thereby, so as to hold up the prongs of the fork when they pass through the fire-pot to support the coals, &c., in the same above the grate, substantially as described.
2. The fire-fork E, consisting of the head c, having the prongsf, in combination with the supports y', forming a tube-like opening,r within which the head e fits closely, whereby said fork will be held horizontal, while permitting' a sliding movement, the outer ends of the prongs being unsupported, substantially as described.
