(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON OI-INEMUS, OF QUINOY, ILLINOIS.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,134, dated November 28, 1899.
Application filed December 27,1898. Serial No. 700,364. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may con/cern:
Beit known that I, ANTON OHNEMU S, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a view of my improved stove, part in elevation and part in vertical section. Fig. II is a detail elevation showing part of the front wall of the stove with the door removed and showing the fender in its closed position. Fig. III is a section taken on line III III, Fig. II, looking in the direction of the arrow that crosses the section-line. Fig. IV is a detail perspective view showing part of the front wall of the stove at the hinge end of the fender. Fig. V is a like view showing part of the fender.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the fire-box, 2 the ash-pit, andA 3 the oven, of a cooking-stove.
4 is the front door of the stove.
5 is the grate.
Inside of the door 4 is a fender 6, to the construction and arrangement of which my invention relates. This fender ts in the opening closed by the door 4. It is hinged at one end to the front wall 10 of the stove by means of ears 7, cast on the front wall and which are perforated to receive vertical lugs 8 on the fender, the fender being recessed at 9 (see Fig. V) to allow the lugs to enter the ears. The shape of the ears is illustrated in Fig. IV, the backs of the ears extending up, as shown at 7a, to form stops and rests, against which the inner face of the fender bears when in closed position. Beneath the ears 7 on the front wall 10 of the stove is a loop 11, that receives a projection or trunnion 12 on the fender. It will be seen that the fender can be opened and closed by swinging it in a horizontal direction, so as to permit access to the front of the lire-box, and it is held in its closed position by means of a lug, (shown by dotted lines at 13, Fig. IL) which engages behind a projection 14 on the front wall of the stove at the opposite end of the opening closed by the door4 to that having the ears 7.
15 represents a projection on the fender for use in opening and closing,A the fender. The lower edge of the fender is provided with slots or openings 16 to admit air to the rebox. At the opposite end of the opening closed by the door 4 to that having the ears 7 is a ledge 17, that receives a trunnion 1S on the fender. The top of the fender is pro-V vided with a central opening 19 to receive a lifter or other tool, so that by raising the fender to disengage the lugs S from the ears 7 the fender may be turned down into a horizontal position on its bearings 1l and 17, thereby forming an extension of the grate of the fireboX, onto which coals may be raked for broiling purposes, the combined width of the fender and grate making a wide surface for broiling purposes, while the fumes are carried into the stove by the draft. To close the fender again,it is simply necessary to turn it into a vertical position on its bearings 11 and 17 and then elevate it to cause the lugs S to enter. the ears 7, and when the fender is thus elevated the coals that were raked onto it are thrown back into the fire-box.
I claim as my inventionp 1. In a stove, the combination of a lire-box,- and a fender located in front of the hre-box and adapted to be moved both in ahorizontal and in a vertical direction, substantially as set forth.
2. In a stove, the combination of a nre-box, and a fender hinged to the front wall of the stove by means of vertically-perforated lat-v erally-extending ears on said front wall and vertical lugs on the fender entering said vertical perforations, substantially as set forth.
3. In a stove, the combination of a fire-box, a fender located in front of the fire-box, and means for supporting the fender so that it may be moved in both a vertical and horizonL tal direction, said means for supporting the fender so as to enable its movement in a horizontal directionconsistingof perforated ears on the front wall of the stove and projections on the fender engaging said ears, and said means for supporting the fender when moved in a vertical direction onsisting of loops or projections on the front wall of the stove en-V gaged by trunnions on the fender, substantially as set forth.
4. A stove comprising a front Wall having, at one end, vertically-perforated earsformcd With upward extensions providing stops, and at the other end a laterally-extending projection, and the fender having at one end recesses, and vertical lugs engaging the ears, and at the other end a laterally-extending lu g engaging the lateral projection 5 substantially as described.
5. A stove comprising a front Wall having, at one end,a vertical loop projecting inwardly, and at the other end a laterally-extending ledge, and a fender having, at one end, a trunnion Working in the loop, and at the other end a trunnion Working on the ledge; substantially as described.
G. A stove comprising a front Wall having', at one end, a loop, and vertically-perforated ears formed With upward extensions providing stops, and at the other end a ledge and a laterally-extending projection, and the fender having, at one end, a trunnion, recesses, and vertical lugs, and at the other end a trunnion and a laterally-extending lug; substantially as described.
