FIRE-PLACE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,962, dated July 28, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES L. PAGE, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Places, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a fire-place containing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a section of the saine in the plane of the line .r x of Fig. l.` Fig. 3 is a top view of the ash trap, dump, or slide, and Fig. 4 is a section in the plane of the line y y of Fig. 3.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts.

A represents the fire-place niche, into which I set a correspondingly-formedmetallicsiding or wall, a. rlhis siding or lining is usually made as a separate or independent structure adapted to be iitted into the hre-place niche, and may be termed a portable lire-place.

B is the chimney-flue, which meets or opens into the rire-place niche'.

C is a folding damper, forming a part ofthe metallic fireplace and located at the lower end of the vflue B.

D D are vertical flanges on the rear side of the rear wall of the metallic fire-place. These ilauges, in conjunction with the brick-work of the chimney, form a llue, E, and Z) is an opening into this flue.

F is the ash trap or dump. This trap or dump consists of a shallow box, c, about the top of which is a horizontal iiange, c', and of a slide, d, supported on interior iianges or ways, e e, inclined, by preference, on the box c.

G G are horizontal lugs or projections on the box c, and G G are studs on the slide d. rlhe bottom of the box c is open, and the Ways e c do not extend entirely along this opening or back to the rear wall of the said box, as is clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.

f is a projection or handle to aid the slide d in being opened and closed by being moved back and forth on the ways e e, and f is a small ear or raised part to enable the slide to be tilted or raised into a vertical position, as indicated by the vertical broken lines in Fig. 4.

The dump or trap F, I either set into the bottom of the nre-place niche or into a iianged plate, g, (shown in Fig. 4,) which plate g,when employed, serves as the bottom of the fireplace.

H is a liue underneath the trap or dump F, and leading into the basement or cellar.

It is to be understood that a grate or basket is arranged in the fire-place, or that a re is built in the usual manner upon andirons. In either case the ashes accumulating upon the bottom of the fire-place may be removed with facility either by drawing outl the slide F or by raising it in the manner indicated in Fig. 4, in which latter case the studs G G rest upon the lugs G G, which serve as a support for the raised slide. Vhether the slide be drawn back or raised the ashes will be dumped into the opening H, and may be brushed or swept to the dump or trap, so that the lire- -place may be wholly cleaned. The dust or light ashes raised by using the dump and by brushing or sweeping the ashes it will be drawn through the opening b into the flue E, and thence up the the chimney, Aespecially when the damper C is closed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I. The combination, with a portable metallic rire-place or lire-place lining, of an ash dump or trap, F, consisting of the flanged box c, having thereon the inclined ways e e, and the lugs G G, and of the slide d, having thereon the studs G G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of a lire-place dump or trap With a portable metallic lire-place or tireplace lining having at or near its bottom the opening b, and having thereon flanges D D, substantially as and for the purposes specilied.
