THEODORE O. VESEY, OF VEST POINT, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-SIXTH TO SIDNEY B. WHITE, OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,084, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed February 8, 1886. Serial No. 191,178.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE O. VEsEY, a a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vest Point, in the county of Clay and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Grates, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view ofmy improved grate. Fig. 2 is a vertical section-al view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View from the rear of the iireback5 and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view showing the damper turned entirely up to cut off draft.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation tore gratcs; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same,-as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the let-ter A indicates the forward wall of'the chimney, against which the fire-place is built. The jambs of the irefplaee, which jambs are Iettered B B in the drawings, have iianges O O projecting outward a short distance above the grate D, and these flanges are continued at the top of the fireplace in a flange, E, projecting from the top piece or lintel of the lire-place, the 'said flanges forming a hood at the upper portion of the fire-place. The fireeback F extends obliquely out from a short distance above the bottom of the grate to near the top of the fire-place, and has anges G G at its side edges, and this back andthe flanges are formed with ribs H crossing each other, which ribs serve to re-enforce there-back and its anges, which are made of iron, and which would be liable to warp or bulge out if they were not re-enforced by the said ribs.
The upper edge of the fire-back, which stops a short distance from the top of the fire-place, bears against the outer edge of a plate or shelf,
(No model.)
I, projecting from'the wall of the chimney, and a damper, J, is located upon said shelf. 5o Trunnions K are formed upon the epds of said damper, in line with its rear edge, and turn in bearings in the jambs, one of said trunnions being provided with the usual form of damperhandle. The outer edge of the damper is bent 55 down to form a flange, L, which prevents any cinders or soot from accumulating upon the said shelt' when the damper is raised, as such accumulations would prevent the damper from being lowered to a horizontall position when 6o desired. As this damper extends from jamb tojamb, and as its front edge is adapted to be moved from the upper edge of the tire-back to the lintel, the draft may be most perfectly regul ated. 6 5
The ribs upon the fire-back will prevent the heat of the lire from warping the lire-back and its anges, and the oblique fire-back and the damper will prevent the heat from passing up in the chimney, the iireback deflecting the 7o heat out into the room.
The fire-place may be used for burning either coal or wood, the grate being dispensed with when wood is burned.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 75 and desire to secure by Lett-ers Pat-ent of the United States- In aiire-place, the combination of the jambs B, a top piece or lintel, the projecting flanges O and E, a nre-back projecting obliquely up- 8o ward to near the top of the fire-place, a horizontal plate projecting from the front wall of the chimney to the upper edge of the lire-back, and a damper above the said plate and having its forward edge bent downward, and formed 85l with laterally-projecting trunnions at its rear corners, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereunto affixed my signature 9o in presence of two witnesses. y
THEODORE C. VESEY.
