STOVE AND FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Tatent. Pate t d N 30 1920 Application filed May 12, 1920. Serial No. 380,738.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLLIE VERNON BUMPASS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corinth, in the county of Alcorn and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves and Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination stove and fire place, and has for, its object to provide a device of this character especially adapted to be arranged in afire place opening and possessing, when so arranged, the capabilities and utilities of both a stove and a fire place.
Another object is to provide a device of this character ofsimple and durable c0nstruction, reliable in operation and easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of myi improvement *ig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, the fire place being shown in section;
Fig. 4 is a view in transverse vertical section; Fig. 5 is a detail view of the joint between the locking section and the stationary section of the grate.
Fig. 6 is a detailview of the rocking grate handle and associated structure.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my invention contemplates a fire place indicated at A, in which my invention is arranged and in connection with which it is adapted to be employed.
A casing indicated generally at B is provided, and consists of side walls 10, a back wall comprising a lower vertical portion 11, an inwardly inclined portion 12 and an upper vertical portion 13, all of said portions except the portion 13 being formed integrally, the upper vertical portion 13 terminating short of the top wall 14: to define with the top wall an opening 15 and a' front wall 16 provided with a door opening 17 therein. The door opening .17 of the front wall is closed by a door 18 having a transparent panel 19 in the upper portion thereof and shutters 20 in the lower portion thereof. As shown in Fig. 3 the side walls are extended, as at 1 0, to conform to the form ofthe portions of the back wall. The casing D isset in thefirelace, as shown in Fig. 1, and the top and side walls of the casing are provided with laterally extending flanges 21 and 22, respectively, which extend over the adjacent portions of the fire-place wall to cover the crevices that might otherwise be formed between the easing and the wall and also serving to adapt the casing to difierent size fire-places and to improve the appearance of the casing in position.
A grate is provided and consists of a stationary rear section 23 fixed to the walls of the casing and including grate bars 24. A movable or rocking front grate section 25 is hinged at2o to the stationary section 22 and the meeting ends of the grate sections are provided with an interfitting tongue and groove 27 and 28, respectively, as shown in detail in Fig. 5. It will be seen in Fig. 1 .thatthe tongue 27 is preferably carried by groove of the sections are nested, as shown in Fig. 5, and take the ma or portion of the strain, the parts being held in this position by the pivotal connection 26 and also by the locking action of the operating handle 33 which is pivoted to swing vertically with respect to the rocking sectlon and constrained against horizontal, swinging with respect thereto, as shown in detail in in position.
The lower portion of the grate section together with the lower vertical portion 11 of the back wall define an ash pit 36 which conveniently receives an ash pan 37.
The opening 15 defined by the upper vertical portion 13 of the back wall, the top The handle 33 thus wall and the adjacent portions of the side wall communicates with the interior of the fireplace which of course leads to the flue of the chimney (not shown). A damper 38 is hinged at 38 to the upper end of the vertical portion 13 of the back wall, and is adjusted and maintained in adjusted position by means of a bar 39 pivoted, as at 40, to the damper and having its outer end racked, as at 4-1, to cooperate with the lower edge of the opening 42 formed in the front wall of the casing. T he outer end of the bar is formed to constitute a handle.
The top l-l of the casing is provided with one or more openings, indicated at 43, which are adapter. to be normally closed by the removable lid 4% similar to a stove-lid. In practice it will be seen that when a fire is made in the grate and the door 18 is closed, the device presents all of the features and utilities of the ordinary stove It, of course, radiates heat and the top thereof provides a surface to receive the articles to be heated, the removable lid providing as in the case of an ordinary stove means by which the intensity of the heat to which the article is exposed may be increased.
If it is desired to use the device as an open iire place, it is only necessary to open the door. The vertical grate bars 29 provide all the features of a grate with respect to utility as well as appearance.
In both uses the tire is of course regulated by the damper 38, the adjustment of which regulates the draft although when the de vice is used as a stove the draft can be further controlled by manipulating the shutters :20. When it is desired to dump the grate as in the case of making a new fire, the handle 33 is released from engagement with the inner notch and the handle is pulled outwardly within the slot 34, thus swinging the outer section away from the inner section and dumping the contents of the grate. When the grate is emptied, the handle 84 is urged backwardly through the slot and again engaged with the innermost notch at which time the tongue and groove of the sections are nested and the parts are in position to receive and hold the fire.
I claim:
