Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,467, dated September 2, 1872; application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERBERT A. HUMMER, of Frenchtown, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cookin g-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexeddrawings making a part of thisspecication, and to the letters and -igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation of a vertical longitudinal section of my coo1 ing-stove. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
This invention has relation to cookingstoves 5 and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the sliding fire-box, the flue in rear thereof with its damper, the chambers at the ends of the fire-box i'n the stovewall, with the detlecting-partitions, registeropenings, and pipes for conveying the hot air to the rear of the stove.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the oven of the stove; B, the smoke-hues; G, the ash-pan. The front wall of the oven is beveled downward to the base of the fire-box, and is continued from this point at a greater inclination, as shown at a, to the ash-pan. D indicates a brace, which supports the top of the stove from the top of the oven. E represents the nre-box. This is not attached to the stove-wall, but is an independent structure, consisting of the two end walls b-b, the rear Wall c, the bottom or sliding grate e, and the front or fixed grate 7c. The end Walls b are provided with flanges d, extending outward from their upper edges, and resting upon ledges n of the stovewall.
\ Between the nre-box wall b and the stove-wall thev openings of the hot-air pipes z, which are laid under the overhanging ledge of the top plate of the stove, extend to the rear, and open into the upright hot-air pipe L. rlhe vbottom grate e is hung at the back, the front ,to and fro endwise. The bottom grate is dumped by separating the bar a', so that the lever 1' can pass through.l This grate will then fall against the lower slant al of the-front oven-wall. The lingers c of the front grate are designed vnot to reach down to the level of the bottom grate, a space, e', being left between for convenience in cleaning out clinkers and other obstructions from the tire-box. The fire-box can be drawn forward on the slides d. When this is done a iiue, F, is opened between the rear wall of the fire-box and the oven-wall, by means of which the draft of the lire may be checked or regulated, and the dust caused by raking may be drawn inward through the tlues ofthe stove, instead of being suered to escape out into the apartment. G indicates a slide-damper, located on the brink of the front ovenwall, and arranged to slide forward for the purpose of closing, more or less, the
flue F, and thus regulating the draft through the same. An arm, H, extends back from the slide G, and is pivoted to the oven-top at vf, and, extending through a slot in the stovewall, serves as a means by which the slide G may be adjusted. From the front of thetop of the stove a curved wall, M, extends downward and rearward, joining the front wall of the stove, and extending over the upper edge of the front grate in the form of a liangc, m', serving as a guide for the supply of coal. The removable magazine N consists of an elliptical or elongated tube, which is designed to t the opening n in the top plate in the manner of a wash-boiler, except that it is bottomless. A top, z, is used with the magazine, which, when the magazine is not in use, may be employed to close the opening a in the top plate of the stove.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the suspended sliding rrr errent.
lire-box E, having the outwardly-extending ilanges d, resting upon the ledges n of the stove-wall, and the slide-damper G, having the forked arm H and pivoted lever 7c, extending through the stove-wall, for regulating the opened iiue F between the rear wall of the fire-box and the oven-Wall, operating substantially as specified.
2. The fire-box E, having the fixed front grate 7c, with short fingers c and long arms b', and the longitudinally-sliding bottom grate e, pivoted in rear, in combination with the hinged bar a and the lever r, substantially as specified.
3. The arrangement of the air-chambers m at each end of a tire-box only7 next to the
