To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN A. MUssELMAN, of Steinsburg, in the'county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
The-object'of my invention is to combine with a cooking-stove an auxiliary heating- 1 stove, so arranged that-it can be used either separately from the cooking-stove or in connection therewith, as may be desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved stove. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of my im proved stove, taken on line am, Fig. l. 1 Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the removable bars of the grate-front. Fig, 4 is an auxiliary grate-front for the fire-chamber, to adapt said chamber to the burning of wood. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of my improved stove; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectionof the stove, taken on lineyyofFig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, A is the cookingstove. B is the top thereof. 0 is the fire-chamber. D is the draft and heat flue between top B and top plate, a, of the oven-chamberD. E E are the ovens, and F is the short neck to which the pipe leading to the chimney-flue is attached. I) is the stove-hearth, and c is the bottom of the stove. Between the hearth b and bottom 0, at the'frontof the stove,'is a space, E, in whichare placed vertical ornamented partitions c 0. Under hearth'lnand between partitions c c, isplaced a cylinder-stove, G, which rests'on the walls of an ash-pit, H,which, in turn, rests on stove-bottom a between cleats d d. The ash-pit H and stove G are adapted to slide in and out of the space under the hearth, so that incase the cylinder-stoveis not required in connection; with themain cooking-stove A it can be taken out and an ash-pan, G (shown in dotted lines,') canbe slipped in under the hearth b on the guides e e, fixed to the under side of hearth b. Stove G is intended, when placed in position under the hearth, to serve as an auxiliary to the main stove for heating purposes, and it may be used as a heater alone, in which case the draft passes through fire-chamber C of the main cooking-stoveA, and thence through the flues of said stove, or it may be used as a heater at the same time that the main stove is Another purpose served byauxiliary cylinder-stove G is that of a receptacle for the fire and unconsumed coal in the tire-chamber 0 after the main stove has been used for cooking and it is no longerrequired for that purpose. Tofaoilitate the dumping of the contents of fire-chamber G into the cylinder-stove G, the fire-chamber grate H is provided with two detached sections, H H, immediately over the grating G and the top of cylinder-stove G.
Sections Hare provided with gudgeons 6 which are held in sockets f in .the side bars, f, of grate H. The gudgeons e serve as pivots for sections, H, on which they turn freely.
The sections H are held in a horizontal position by buttonsf; pivoted to the under side of each of side bars, f. l The buttons f, when turned at right angles to side bars, f, under the free edges 9 of sections H, support said sections in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig.5, flush with the fixed bars of the bottom of grate H; but when the button is turned from under the free edges 9 the sections H drop to a pendent position, hanging by the gudgeons e leaving an opening in the middle of the bottom of grate H, through which 'the contents of fire-chamber 0 fall upon the circular grating G ,if the intention is merely to empty the fire-chamber O but if the fire is to be transferred from chamber 0 to stove G, then the grating G is removed, and the contents of-said chamber fall into stove G, as before described.
The front bars, h, of grate H are each made front bars, h,-are held in a plate, I, placed in the front of fire-chamber G, between lugs g, fixed to the end lining-plates, h of the chamber O, and the frontplate, g ofsaid chamber. Said plate I is held loosely in its place between said lugs and front plate, 9 so that it can be readily taken out and replaced when required. The front bars, h, are placed in vertical inortises in plate I, so that their-lower ends han g between the front ends of the bottom bars of grate H, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The upper ends of bars h are provided with lips h, which project over the top of plate 1, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby said bars h are prevented from slipping out of the mortises 1'.
Near the lower ends of bars h, on the outside,

In case one of the front bars, h, should be broken or become burned out, it can be removed and another put in its place without disturbing the remaining bars of the front. If it is desired to remove a clinker or other obstruction from the inside of the grate, one or more of the bars h are pushed up sufficiently far to allow the obstruction to be removed, when, by inserting the poker or a hook in the notch z", the bar or bars that were lifted can be drawn down again in place.

H H are the front sliding doors of the ashpit 6 under tire-chamber C.
H is a hole in the front of the stove-top B, through which fuel is passed to the fire-chamber 0. Hole H is covered by a sliding plate, I, held in grooves i in the sides of hole 11. On the inner end, j, of plate I are hooks j, which, when the said plate is drawn out to uncover hole H take hold of the upper edge, k, of chute 7c, and hold plates I I in a pendent position, such as they occupy in Fig. 2. By this arrangement of sliding plate I said plate is prevented from losing its connection with the stove. At the same timeitis permitted to be drawn out suiticiently far to allow the fuel to be discharged from the scuttle or shovel into the fire-chamber 0 without ditficulty.
The fire-chamber 0, when arranged as above described, is adapted to burn coal. It is intended, however, to use wood in said firechamber when necessary. For this purpose it is provided with sliding end doors, J J, coveing openings Z, leading into fire-chamber WVhen wood is to be used as a fuel, the plate I, with front grate-bars, h, is removed, and the grate-front K, Fig. 4, is put in place of plates I I. The end lining-plates, h W, are also removed, so that the wood can be passed directly through openings linto the fire-chamber. The grating G over stove Gr may also be removed, and a circular lid or cover substituted for it.

To this partition is attached a sliding damper, it, operated from the outside by a rod, n extending through the side of the stove. Damper n is used to regulate the draft. Between opening m and neck F is another partition, o, with acentral opening, 0, covered by a sliding damper, p, likewise operrated from the outside by a rod, 19. Between partition 0 and the back plate of the stove is an opening, q, in plate a, just under neck F. The opening q is covered by a slide, r, operated to open and close opening g by a rod, 1:. I
By means of draft-openings m m, damper p, and slide 1' the draft can be regulated to carry the products of combustion around ovens E E, or directly from fire-chamber 0, through fines D and neck F, to the chimney, and by a proper arrangement of openings m m the products of combustion can be carried down the front, under the bottom, and up the back of the oven, or over the top and around the oven, as may be desired. For example, to direct the products of combustion around the oven, the damper p is closed, and slide 1' is moved from over opening q; then, if they are to be led partly around the oven, the cover m is removed from opening m, and opening m is closed. The draft now is through opening m, in the direction of arrow 1, and it carries the products of combustion down in front of the oven, under the bottom thereof, and up the back, passing out through opening q.
To obtain a circulation over the top of the oven, the opening m is closed and m is opened. This arrangement causes the products of combustion to follow arrow 2, whereby they are drawn over the top of the oven, and from there pass down the front and around the oven, as before.
To shut the heat 0E from the oven completely, both of the openings m m are closed, the damper p opened, and slide r moved over opening q. Thus arranged the products'of combustionare carried by the draft directly from fire-cham her 0, through flue D, opening 0, and thence, through neck F, to the chimney.
L is an opening through which the ashes, cinders, &c., can be removed from under the ovens E E. Said opening is provided with a suitable door, L.
M M are shelves placed on either side of the cylinder-stove G, and supported on partitions c c and brackets S S. Said shelves are intended to receive dishes and other kitchen utensils which it is desired to warm.
