N, PETERS. Phnm-Lllhognph UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOLESWORTH KING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FIRE-PLACE.
QPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,747, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed February 24, 1885. Serial No.156,671. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOLESWORTH KING, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of the same.
My invention relates to'a certain improvement in the back of fire-places, whereby a double draft is secured; and it consists in the arrangement of dampers so connected together that while one is open the other is closed, by means of which the draft can be changed from the lower to the upper one when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows my invention when placed in any ordinary grate or fireplace; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same, showing the lower damper up and lower vent open, and Fig. 3 a sectional view showing the upper damper up and upper vent open.
A A are the two openings in the rear of an inclined back of a fireplace, A being the lower opening or vent through which and when opened a direct draft is made for the purpose of igniting or starting the fire, and while the same is open for this purpose A is to be closed. A, the upper opening or vent, is made to be opened whenever the fire is well started, and while so opened A is to be closed. B B are the dampers designed to be operated upon the openings A and A, respectively. These dampers are s. arranged by being connected together by the rod 0. and while being hinged reversely, that as the damper B is closed damper B is opened, and vice versa. These dampers can be operated by any convenient means, either by the rod D, as shown, or by means of an eye, G, on the damper B and a hooked poker to be used by the hand, or by any other equivalent means. The two openings or vents A A can also be used so as to change the draft by means of a slide, E, which, when pushed down, would close the opening A, or when pushed up close the opening A. This slideEis butan equivalent of but not so convenient or practicable as the dampers B B, connected together in a reverse direction by the rod 0. This slide E can also be used, when desirable, in closing either the lower or the upper opening or vent, whichever may remain open when the two dampers B B are used, so that there will be no openings at all through the back. This is useful to keep soot and other substances from falling into the grate or room when fire is not used.
I have tested practically my improvement and find that it works 'very effectively.
By this invention a direct draft can be had immediately through the fuel, whether wood or coal, when the opening or vent A is opened and the upper vent, A, closed.
This invention supersedes and entirely ob viates the necessity of usingthe common blower. It secures a perfect draft, prevents a smoking fire, and will take away all soot and cinders while the grate is being shaken. The openings A A can be made of any size to suit the dimensions. of the fire-place proper, according to the draft required.
This invention can be adjusted to any size fire-place.
It is designed to make the back or incline of which my invention isa part or to which it is attached so as to cover the entire flue of a chimney, thereby leaving only the openings A A for the egress of the smoke, and the fireplace can be made of brick or iron or any desired material.
I am aware that it is oldto have openings in the back of fire-places-for various purposes, and do not claim, broadly, openings in the back of fire-places. Iam also aware that such openings have been' controlled by the use of dampers.
What I do claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a fire-place having aback provided with openings or vents, of dampers and a rod connecting them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a fire-place having a back provided with openings or vents, of dampers and a rod connecting them, and the rod D for actuating them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MOLESWORTH KING.
