F I R E P LAC E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,240, dated December 23, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MOLESWORTH KING, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga part of the same.
This invention is designed as an improvement on the improved fire-place patented to me November 3, 1885, by Letters Patent No. 329,747; and it consists in a doublesetof dampers or one double damper to alternately cover one or the other of two openings and a supplemental damper in connection with the lower of said openings, which are made to operate together in a manner somewhat similar to that specified in said patent No. 329,747, except that they are constructed differently and effect a different result, by means of which dampers a double draft is made, and the draft can be made more perfect, more easily controlled, and changed and regulated than by the means described in said patent.
In my application, Serial No. 352,622, filed herewith, I have claimed the triangular shield, hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings filed herewith, but to which I make no claim in this application.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View showing the dampers closed and the slide in the upper damper open. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing all the dampers closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional View with the upper dampers open and one of the lower ones closed. Fig. t is a detail view of the two dampers made at right angles. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the shield.

- The operation of my invention is as follows: The result from the use of the two dampers b and b when the slide in the damper b is closed is practically the same as that accomplished by the dampers in my said patent; also, when the dampers l) and c are closed the result is the same as when the slide E is used in my said patent, effectually closing the rear part of the fireplace, except the opening made by means of the nut 0 But while my said patent accomplishes all it was designed to do, yet there were defects in it which this invention was designed to cure. By the use of the upper damper d in the top of the shield O? and the working of thelower damper c 011 a pivot instead of as a slide and by placing the nut 0 so as to prevent being closed tight the gas from the coal can always escape and yet the heat be effectually retained when dampers c and b are closed tight. In this way the results of a base-burner stove are obtained, yet with the advantages of an open fireplace, and a perfect ventilation is had all the time. These advantages cannot be accomplished by my prior invention, as in that one of the dampers is necessarily open when the fire is ignited, thus making too great a draft at all times for hard coal. lVhen the fire is to be started, the lower dampers c and and b and the damper d in the top of the shield are thrown open until the coal is sufficiently ignited. Either hard or soft coal can be used. "When the damper b is closed, damper b is necessarily at right angles thereto and extends out toward the back of the shield, thus lessening the air-space in the shield, and thereby greatly increasing the draft, by means of which, together with the general construction of the other parts of my fire-place, there is no necessity of a blower when starting a fire or when shaking the ashes. After the coal is sulliciently ignited, damper d in the top of the shield is regulated so as to have only sufficient draft as may be desired, damper b is closed, and the slide b therein left open or closed, as desired, and the damper c is lifted and drawn up, but by reason of the nut c" is not entirely closed. By this arrangement a fire can be made and regulated so as to utilize all the heat from the coal, and control it as the weather requires. The fire can be preserved as effectually as in a base-burner stove and yet give all the advantages of an open fire-place with complete ventilation.

The shield C not only prevents dirt and soot from falling upon and clogging the dampers, but it protects the tile facing and mantels from excessive heat. It prevents a downward draft, and is a perfect prevention of smoke and ashes from coming in the room, and by the proper regulation of the dampers, a strong draft is created through the bottom dampers and the use of a blower entirely obviated. By the use of this shield much time is saved in setting, and it is practicable to set two open tire-places back to back, or one over the other, in the same line, even if the flueis only eight inches by eight inches. This invention accomplishes all the results claimed by my prior invention, yet more ef fectually and in a differentmanner and by different means. All these advantages of this improved fireplace have been demonstrated effectually and satisfactorily.
Now, having fully described my said invention, what I claim in this application is 1. The combination, with a supportingdamper plate having two orifices therein, of a double damper made rigid substantially at right angles, the same being pivoted to said supportiug'plate midway between said orifices, whereby the tilting of said dampers may close one orifice and open the other, substantially as shown.
2. A double damper consisting of two plates formed integral with and arranged at right angles to each other, having means for pivotally attaching the same to a damper-plate, and openings in one of the plates of said damper, and a sliding plate having corresponding openings therein, substantially as shown and described.

The con'ibination, with a supportingdamper plate having double orifices therein, of a double rectangular-shaped damper pivotally mounted between said orifices, whereby one orifice may be opened and the other closed, and a supplemental damper in operative conjunction with the lowermost orifice, and means for preventing the same from entirely closing said orifice, substantially as shown and described.
