Description
1-. STILL. Cooking Stove.
' Patented Spt. 19, 1840.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES STILL, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO SAML. GLASS.
cooxnve-srovn' Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES STILL, of Zanesville, Muskingum county, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Cooking-Stoves, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the exterior. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of, showing the interior; Fig. 3, the grate.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the figures.
This stove generally resembles some other cooking-stoves in use, having a large square oven A near the center surrounded by fines B B B for the circulation of the heat, a fire-place C in front, smoke collar D be hind, perforated boiler plate E on the top and ash box F below the hearth G, the whole supported upon four legs H in the usual manner.
The improvement claimed consists in having a grate I arranged in the fireplace C made with open spaces in the back of it for the purpose of allowing the heat therefrom to pass under and up behind the oven as well as through the fireplace and over the top of the oven to the collar D of the flue leading into the chimney where the two columns of smoke and heat meet and pass off into the chimney, by which construction and direction given to the draft the bottom of the oven is heated to the same degree as the top and which draft may at any time be all caused to pass off through the upper flue by having a damper K arranged in the back fine 13 to be opened or closed at pleasure, said damper being represented as opened in Fig. 2; and in order to prevent 1,798, dated September 19, 1840.
the front of the oven becoming too much heated from its contiguity to the fire, there is formed a triangular guard, by arranging two plates L, M, in such manner as toform with the front side of the oven a triangle, the upper plate L which forms part of the back of the fireplace extending from the upper edge of the grate I (placed a few inches in front of the oven) back to the top of the oven and the lower plate M extending to the bottom of the oven, which latter plate prevents the smoke from ascending between the grate and oven.
In the bottom plate under the front part of the oven is formed an additional ash box N, which is termed the back ash box, as the usual ash box F under the hearth is called the front ash box. An aperture P isleft in the side plate of the stove through which access is had to clean the bottom flue, which aperture is called the scraper hole.
The top plate of the oven which forms the bottom of the upper flue B is extended over the back flue into the collar D, so as to divide it and prevent the columns of smoke uniting until they reach the chimney.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The mode of forming a double draft by extending the top plate of the oven back so as to divide the collar D to which the smoke pipe is attached into two parts, for the purpose of allowing a draft above and below the oven at the same time as above described.
2. In constructing a flue under the oven with an opening at its bottom and adapting thereto a movable ash box as set forth.
