COOKING-STOVE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 3,612, dated June 5, 1844.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC STRAUB, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Manner of Constructing Cooking- Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.

' In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1, is a perspective View of my stove, taken on the rear thereof, the back plate, Fig. 2, be ing removed for the purpose of showing the manner of arranging the partitions and fines between the back plate and the back oven plate. Fig. 3, is a view of my stove, taken from one side, the outer plate being removed; by which means the general arrangement of the interior is clearly shown.

A, is the fire chamber, and B, an oven situated, in part, below said fire chamber, but occupying the whole bottom portion of the stove, with the exception of the flue spaces.

C, is a boiler space in the rear of the fire chamber.

D, D, D, are fines surrounding the oven; the part D, of this flue I enlarge, as shown in the drawing, and I leave the boiler space, C, deeper than usual, for the reception of cooking utensils; by which means they are more completely exposed to the action of the fire than is ordinarily the case. The enlargement of the flue space at D, and the greater depth of the boiler space at C, are attained by the omission of the upper oven, usually located at that part of such stoves. By this omission, the lower oven is more effectually heated than when the two ovens are combined; and, from its size, the oven which I construct is capable of performing all the service generally required of a cooking stove. The enlargement of the flue at D, I have found of essential advantage in promoting the draft of the stove.

The arrangement of the flue. space between the back oven plate, J, and the back plate, K, of my stove is peculiar. In a number of stoves which have been constructed, this rear flue space is divided into three vertical fines, by partitions extending partition there is a like opening to which a c amper, G, is adapted, and which is to be opened when the oven is not to be used.

raised closes one half of the throat leading from the fire chamber into the boiler space, and thereby directs the whole draft under one of the boilers.

By surrounding the spaces leadinginto the flue space D, and into the boiler space C, by the partition E, E, I am enabled to direct the draft around the oven more effectively than by any former arrangement. The damper, G, being closed, the direction of the draft will then be, first, through the two openings, F, F, into the rear fine space, D; then down, and forward, under the oven; thenup through the fore flue space, then back to the enlarged flue space D; which flue, opening into that included with in the partitions, E, E, allows the smoke and heated air to escape by the exit pipe, I; all of which is indicated by the arrows.

Having thus, fully described the manner in which I construct my improved cooking stove, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The manner of forming the space leading to the exit pipe, by means of the partition plates, E, E, for the purpose set forth, in combination with the enlarged flue space, D, leading thereto; by which arrangement, and that of the fines, I secure an unobstructed draft into the exit pipe, I; and am enabled to direct the draft around the oven, in the manner herein fully made known.
