UNTTED STATES PATENT orrron.
EDWARD A. BUTTS AND R. F. STEVENS, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,474, dated March 14, 1848.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD A. BUTTS and RICHARD F. STEVENS, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
\Ve construct the stove in such a manner that the fire-box (B) is over the oven (C), and the fire or heated air passes backward over the backmost part of the oven, thence into the pipe Or by closing the damper (G) it passes backward behind the oven in two flues (D) which are separated at their upper part by the smoke flue (R) and at their lower part by a single division plate. It then passes forward under the oven in two flues (H, H) which are separated by a single division plate 0, in the center. It then passes upward in front of the oven in two flues separated by a single plate It then passes backward in a single flue (L) through the upper part of the oven in the center and under the the box, thence through the backmost or raised part of the oven, thence into the central flue (R) at the back of the stove, thence into the smoke pipe The single flue (L) is constructed in such a manner that it is of less width than that of the oven (C), that its upper plate at the front part forms the central part of the bottom of the fire-box (B), and at the back part forms a bottom for the upper or raised part of the oven. The sides of the flue (L) do not form any portion of the sides of the oven. part forms a portion of the top of the oven. The upper portion of the oven is connected with the lower by means of the space upon each side of the flue which is occupied by a narrow grate. lVe then construct a boiler having its inner part and bottom made in any of the usual forms and having its outer plate (T) attached at its upper edge to the upper edge of the boiler in such a manner as to leave a space between the boiler proper and the outer plate (T). The outer plate rests upon the stove around the boilerholes, and sustains the weight of the boiler and its contents, allowing the heated air to pass up between the plate (T) and the body of the boiler )Vhat we claim as our invention, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The use of a single central flue passing through the oven, and constructed substantially in the manner above described.
2. e also claim the manner above described of constructing boilers for cooking stoves, viz. by the addition of an outer plate as above described for the purpose of admitting the heated air to pass upward around the sides of the boiler and above the upper plate of the stove.
