Description

W. GALLUP.
Cooking Stove.
Patented June 10, 1846.

STATEH PATENT QFFIOE.
WILLIAM GALLUP, OF NORWALK, OHIO.
COOKING-STOVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLmM GALLUP, of Norwalk, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in the Manner of Constructing Cooking- Stoves; I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawing is a perspective representation of my stove, and Fig. 2, a vertical section thereof through its center, from front to back, the same letters of reference being used in each of these figures to designate like parts.
A, A, is the fire chamber, which is connected with the main body, or oven part, of the stove, by a fiat flue B, B, which extends the whole width of the stove, and slides back and forth, and is capable of being passed entirely into the upper portion, or flue C, of the main body, or oven part, of the stove, so as entirely to close the space marked H. The fire chamber extends down so as to rest, and slide upon, the bottom plate D, D, of the stove, and has openings, or grate bars in front, and extending down on its lower side, as at E, for the admission of air, as in the ordinary open grate, the ashes from which fall into the ash-pit, or sink, F, in the bottom plate. I make four boiler holes G, G, in the top plate of the sliding part of my stove, and the same number in the top plate of the main body, and these are so arranged as that, when the front portion is slid in, its two rear holes will coincide with the two forward holes in the top plate of the main body.
\Vhen the fore part is drawn out, there will be a space H, formed between the two portions, having, on one side of it, the back plate of the fire chamber; on the other, the fore plate of the oven flue, and at the top the flue B, B; by which arrangementthis space is admirably adapted to the purpose of roasting, heating and other cooking operations, and is intended to receive a tin, or other roaster of any convenient form. That shown in the drawing, and marked 1, is in the form of a drawer, or dripping pan.
J, is the oven in the main body of the stove, which oven is surrounded by flues at four of its sides the draft passing around it, as indicated by'the arrows in the sectional drawing; which drawing will fully illustrate the manner of arranging the fiues. There is a damper at K, to open a direct communication from the fire chamber to the exit pipe, when desired, as in many other stoves.
Having thus fully described the construction, and the mode of using my stove, what I claim therein as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The forming of a baking compartment H, by arrangingrthe oven below the throat B, of the furnace, in the manner described, instead of above it, as heretofore, by which means a radiating surface is presented at the back of the compartment.
