t UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' THEODORE C. VESEY AND WILLIAM G. WHITE, OF'WEST POINT, MISSISSIPPI; SAID VESEY ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD .I-IIS RIGHT TO SIDNEY B. \VHITE,
OF SAME PLACE.
FIRE-PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming: part of Letters Patent No. 361,657, dated April 19, 1887. Application filed May 17, 1886. Serial No. 202,369. I (No model) I v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THEODORE O. V-EsEY and WILLIAM 0. WHITE, both residents of lVest Point, in the county of Clay and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Places; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refe'reucebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figurel is a-front view of our improved fireplace. Fig. 2 is a. vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a rear view of the grate and fire-back removed from the wall of the chimney.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to that class of fire-places in which a damper slides at the top of the outwardly-inclined fire-back; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a fire-place having the back and sides of the basket-grate open, similar .to its front, causing even draft at all sides thereof, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA indicates the wall of the chimney, to which the jambs B B and lintel G are secured, and
- the upper portions of the said jambs and the lintel are provided with outwardly-projecting flanges D D and E, forming a capat the upper portion of the opening for the grate.
An outwardly inclined fire-back, F, is secured with its side edges to side pieces, H H, dctachably secured to the front edges of the 40 jambs, and extends outwardly to within a sufficient distance from the lintel to leave asmoke-' passage between its upper edge and thelintel. The forward face of this fire-back is smooth, while its rear face is provided with re-enforcing ribs G.
The side pieces, H H, which are secured to the side edges of the fire-back and to the j ambs, close the grate at the sides, and the lower ends of these side pieces are provided with slots I, causing the said lower portions to form open portions of the fire-basket.
An inclined grate-back, J, is joined at its upper edge to the lower edge of the fire-back,
and has its side edges rcmovably secured to the rear edges of the open portions of the side pieces, the lower forwardly-proj ecting portion of the grate-back being supported by legs K.
L is the basket, which is removably attached to the jambs, and this forward .portion of the basket, together with the open back and the open portions of the side pieces, will form a basket open at all sides, so that the draft may pass upward through the fuelin the basket from all sides, causing an even combustion of the fuel.
A damper, M, slides upon the horizontal plate N, which is secured to the upper edge of the fire-back and to the wall of the chimney, sliding, preferably, with its inner portion in a slot, 0, in the said wall, and the forward edge of this damper-plate is bent upward to form a flange, P.
A narrow plate, Q, is hinged with its lower edge to the damper-plate inside of the flange, and may be tilted at any angle, the upper edge of the hinged plate reaching nearly to the outer edge of the flange upon the lintel when the plate is tilted upward.
It will be seen that, in connection with the outwardly-inclined fire-back and projecting lintel, the damper-plate, when drawn out, will stop the draft more or less, and when the damper-plate is drawn out the hinged plate may be raised more or less, still cutting off more of the draft, the damper-plate and the hinged plate cutting off the draft almost entirely when drawn entirely out and tilted up in a vertical plane, a narrow space only re maining, through which gases arising from the fuel in the basket may be carried off and just sufficient draft may pass to keep the fuel glowing.
This grate being open at all sides, the combustion will be freer and more perfect than in a grate surrounded at its rear or rear and sides with closed walls, so that fuel which requires considerable draft may be burned in this grate which could not be burned in grates having one or more sides closed, and when fuel having free combustion is burned in the grate the damper may be drawn sufficiently far out to prevent the fuel from burning too fast.
The re-enforcing ribs of the fire-back will prevent the said back from Warping, and the fire-back being inclined, it will throw out the heat from the grate into the room.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a fire-place having an outwardly-inclined fire-back and an overhanging lintel, a
damper-plate sliding at the upper edge of the said fire-back, and a plate hinged to the outer edge of said damper, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. 7
2. In a fire-place having an outwardly-inclined fire-back and an overhanging lintel,'the
- combinationof a damper-plate sliding outward upon the upper edge of the said fire-back, and having its outer edge bentupward to form a flange, with a plate hinged at its lower edge inside of the flange of the damper-plate, and extending when tilted upward nearly to-said lintel, as and for the'purpose shown and set fOIth;
3. In a fire-place, the combination ofjambs and a lintel formed with acap at the upper portion, an inclined fire-back, side pieces secured to the side edges of the fire-back and having open lower portions, an inclined grate back joined with the lower edge of the fireback and connected to the lower portions of the side pieces, and a grate-basket secured to the side pieces, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. I
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WVitnesses:
E. O. SPALDING, J. W. BRADY.
