FIRE-PLACE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,282, dated October 2, 1888.

Application filed December 27, 1887. Serial No. 259,109. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANNA J. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blackburn, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Places, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in fire-places; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fire-place provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation showing the manner of attaching the hood. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the hood.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a fire-place, in rear of the back wall of which is formed a vertical air-flue, B, which communicates with the chimney above the fire-place. This air flue B is provided with a metallic lining, G, the front portion of which at the lower end thereof is cut away, thereby providing an opening for the admission of the lire-shovel in removing the ashes which may fall to the bottom thereof through the chimney. Along the edges of this opening I provide the lining with the lateral flanges D, which are secured to the back wall of the fire place. By this construction I prevent the bricks or mortar in the chimney or flue falling out, and thereby overcome the danger of fire arising from defective lines, at the same time securing a perfect draft.

E designates the fire-place front, which is constructed of sheet metal and has the integral top F and sides G, which rest against the top and sides, respectively, of the brick-work of the fire place. In the sides G, near the up per ends of the same, I provide the hooks H, which are secured in the brick-work of the fire-place, thereby firmly fastening the lining in place. The front E has an open arched space, as shown, and on its rear side along the arched cdge, I form the staples or loops I, which are engaged by the lugs or hooks J, projecting from the upper arched edge of the hood K, thereby securing said hood in position. This hood is projected from the front and serves to provide an increased heat-radiating surface and also to accelerate the draft.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and efficient device whereby the entire fire-place will be provided with a metallic lining,thereby overcoming the danger of fires from defective dues and insuring a strong draft.

The herein-described improvement in fireplaces, eomprising the front E, having the in tegral top F and sides G, and provided with an arched lower edge, the loops I on the rear side of the front arranged along said arched edge, and-the hood K, having an upper arched edge, and provided with the integral lugs J, projecting from said edge and adapted to engage the loops I, as set forth.
