Description

ELLEN WHITE. Portable Fire Plape.
No 168 821. I 'Paxemdocrpn isvs.
Nil-trims, PHUYOMTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGn ELLEN WHITE, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN PORTABLE FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.168,821, dated October 11, 1875 application filed April 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEN WHITE, bf the city of J oliet, in the county of Will and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fire- Places; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referto which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de-' scribe its construction and operation, referring to'the annexed drawing, in which 7 Figure 1 is a front elevation of my portable fireplace, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
A represents the platform or base, upon which the frame B is secured by screws or otherwise, as may be deemed most convenient or desirable. In the back part of the frame B is formed a dust-flue, G, of any suitable construction, to carry up all the dust to the main flue, thus avoiding the dust coming out in the room when removing ashes, and when sweeping around the fire-grate. D is the basket or grate, constructed in any suitable manner, and attached to the frame B. Under this grate is the ash-druwer E, which can be taken out for dumping the ashes. It receives the ashes, coals, &c., that mayfall from the grate. G is one of the back plates forming the front of the dust-flue C, and rests on the base A. It extends from side to side of the frame A, between the side fire-linings H H, which may be made of any suitable material. I represents the upper back plate, extending from the upper edge of the lower back plate Gr sufficiently close to the front piece or top of front piece as to leave a space, a, of from one to two and tire length of the frame. By having this space or throat not over two and a half inches a good draft is obtained without the aid of side doors or draw-plates. From the throat a the plate H is continued to the back forming the flue b, which is made wider or deeper at the back than at the throat, so as to give a good and free draft. On top of the frame B is a drum, J, made at its lower end of the same size as the top of the flue b, and then tapered off to any desired height to fit a round pipe. This drum forms an equalizer of the draft, causing the blaze to spread the entire length of the back-plate. I
With my fire-place the blaze is checked at the throat 12, causing the heat to be confined to the room.
Either hard or soft coal or wood may be used in my fireplace without smoking.
The various parts of this device may be made of cast or sheet iron, or of any other suitable material, and may be made plain or ornamented, as desired, and to form a mantelpiece.
I am'aware that it is not new in fire-place heaters to use a forwardly-inclined deflectingplate in the rear of which is a vertical airchamber.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a fire-place heater, of 1 the back plate G and rear dust-flue 0, opening into the room beneath the ash-pan, and the plate I, of one piece of metal, bent forward at an angle to the top front of the fire-place, forming a contracted throat, or, and thence bent rearward at an angle, forming a gradually-widening flue, b, and extended through the top of the fireplace, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of March, 1875.
ELLEN WHITE.
