FIRE-PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of` Letters Patent No. 267,885, dated November 21, 1882,
Application filed September 2, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs S. HAEDING, of Ripley, in the county-ot' Brown and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,`reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the back plate, arched top, and covings or jambs of my improved lire-place, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Myinvention contemplates an improved construction ot' open lire-places, having for its object to economize fuel by providing for its thorough combustion, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which `I have shown so much of a {ire-place as is necessary to properly illustrate the nature ot' my improvement, A designates the. back wall or back plate, upon which the grate or lire-bashet B` is secured by hooks b, fitting into eyebolts a, nutted to the back plate above the draft-hole D. The back plate is curved rearwardly, forming an easy curve from the top of the grate between the inclined covings C, as
shown at Al and is then recurved as shown at (No model.)
| A2, to form a dome or ho`o`d,H,which impinges with its lower front edge upon the throat T, leading up into the flue. this hood overlaps the grate between the covings from side to side, so as to deflect the unconsumed products of combustion back into the tire. Besides operating in this manner, it heats the air contained in the air-space S, which surrounds the hood, the heated air being permitted to escape into the room through registers R in the upper corners of the covin gs, back of the throat.
a To prevent soot from being thrown out upon the hearth in front of the grat e,"the lower frontpartot1 the hood is provided with a guard, Gr, or defiector, which is hung on hinges to It will be seen that permit of its adjustment at different angles, as
shown in dotted lines, according to the nature ofthe fuel burnt in the grate.
I claim- As an improvement in open fireplaces, the curved back plate, A A', reclirved to form a dome or hood, H, overlapping the grate, with its downwardly and outwardly projectingfront plate, A2, provided with an adjustable soot guard or detlector, G, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoimg as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature iu presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. HARDING.
