' hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1o which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to heaters, and more particularly to stoves, and has for its object to provide a stove adapted for use in connection with a fireplace and which will be of simple construction and arrangement.

Another object is to provide a stove equipped with an attaching-frame and fenders to protect adjacent woodwork from the heat of the stove.

An additional object is to provide a stove which will be economical in its use of fuel.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.

In the drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front view of the present invention in position in a fireplace. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view showing a modified form of the stove. Fig. 4 is a top plane view of the stove shown in Fig. 3, illustrating the fender. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken through one side of the frame, showing the arrangement of the shields and the means for .securing the frame in position.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a wall 5, in which there is formed a fireplace 6, and disposed above the fireplace there is. a mantel 7, having supporting side panels 8. The opening of the fireplace 6 is surrounded by a frame 9, including sides 10 and a horizontal top piece 11, this frame being secured in position by means of rods 12, which are passed therethrough and embedded in the masonry of the wall. A bracket 13 is carried by the top piece 11 of the frame and has secured thereto an outwardly-eX- tending fender 14, which lies beneath the mantel 7.

Embedded in the wall of the fireplace and communicating with the main fiue 15 there is a flue-box 16, which extends into the fireplace for a purpose to be presently described.

stove proper (indicated at 17) is provided and consists of a hollow bodyportion 18,.in cluding end walls 19 and front and rear walls 20 and 21, respectively. `The upper ends of the end walls are inclined from front to rear, the rear wall being somewhat higher than .the front wall, and secured Yupon theupper ends of the walls there is a top 22, downwardly and forwardly slanted. A bottom .23 is provided for the body portion, and in the lower portion of the front wall 20 there is formed a door 24, having a suitable closure 25, provided With an adjustable damper 26.

Supporting-heads 28 are carried by the inner faces of the walls just above the door and receive thereupon a grate 26', and formed in the front wall 20 above the grate there is a fire-door 27, having a closure 28', provided with a damper 29.

The body portion 18 is disposed with its rearward portion within the inclosure of the frame 9, and upon its end walls there are vertically-eXtending ribs 29 which rest against the outer faces of the sides 10 of the frame and are secured thereto by suitable attaching devices. Legs 30 support the body portion, and in the upper end of the rear wall 21 there is an opening 31, provided with an outwardly-extending flange 32, which is received in the inner end of the flue-box 16.

In Figs. 3 and 4 there is shown a modified form of the invention, in which a body portion 17 corresponds with the body portion 18 and in which the front and side walls are curved into each other, the body portion having a central enlargement 33, as shown.

The fender 14 has upon its free longitudinal edge a central projecting portion 34, which lies above the body portion of the stove and which has its under surface lined with suitable fireproof material, as shown at a, the under face of the remainder of the fender being covered with similar material.

Secured to the side panels 8 of the mantel at opposite sides ofthe body portion of the stove there are metallic shields 35, which have their edge portions at their free sides turned to extend over the forward faces of the panels, as shown at 36, the shields being thus arranged to protect the panels from the heat of the stove.

The method of feeding the stove will be readily understood, and it will be seen that a heating apparatus is provided which is but little more complicated than an ordinary fireplace, but by reason of its actual radiatingsurface will give forth more heat than may be IOO IIO

derived from an open fire. The opening 31, which of course is the flue-opening, is disposed adjacent to the rearward edge ofl the top 22, and it has been found that the inclination of this top, as set forth, is conducive to a strong draft through the body portion when the dampers are in position to permit of such draft.

What is claimed is The combination with a wall having a fireplace therein, of a mantel disposed above the fireplace, supporting-panels for the mantel at opposite sides of the fireplace, a frame surrounding the fireplace, securing devices engaged in the frame and in the wall, a body portion disposed with its rearward portion within the inclosure of the frame, said body portion being adapted for the reception of fuel and being arranged for the combustion of said fuel therewithin, a fender secured to the frame'b'et'ween the' body'portion and the mantel, fireproofing material carried by the under surface of the fender, said wall having a flue therewithin, a flue-box communicating with the Hue, said body portion having a flanged opening in said rearward wall, said flange being disposed Within the flue-box and shields secured to the side panels at opposite sides of the body portion.
