IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1405621, dated July 8, 1873; application filed April 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN L. GARLINGTON, of Snapping Shoals, in the county of Newton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Grate for Fire-Places, Snc., of which the following is a specilication:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a front view ot' my improved grate, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. l.

Ihe object of my invention is to construct an improved grate, which may be adjusted to any chimney-place, allowing full control of the iire and increasing the heating properties of the same. My invention consists ot' a grate with inclined back plate and sliding dampers to throw forward the `heat and regulate the same. It also consists in adjustable side plates to it the grate into a chimney.
In the drawing, A represents the grate, of suitable metal, adapted in shape and size to the open lire-places in use. It consists of upright side plates B, which may be made ot' sheet or cast iron with extension plates O at top and bottom to adj ust the grate to the height of the fire-places. The extension-plates have short vertical slots a, which, in connection with rivets or set-screws b, lock them to the side plates B. The top extension-plates C carry the laterally-connecting plate d, to which the face or front plate e is attached. Plate d and guide projections f, at the sides ot' the top extension-plates C, have a slig t upward inclination and carry the damper D. The back plate E is applied laterally to the extending sides B, and riveted or otherwise connected to them. This back plate-E and damper D may also be secured to the brick sides of the chimneyplates in case no side plates B are used. Back plate E is inclined under an angle of about fortyve degrees toward the front, throwing thereby the heat into the room instead of a1- lowing the same to escape to the chimney. A
large proportion of the heat lost in common lire-places may thereby be utilized and the expense of open lires be considerably reduced. Projecting strips g are cast or riveted on back plate E in an upward direction to prevent the wood or logs -from packing too closely toward the back, permitting at the same time the continuous admission of oxygen to the ire from all sides. The upper end of back plate E has a flange,h, turned up under a right angle,
which corresponds with several projecting strips 71. of back-extension plate F, allowing the forward or backward adjustment of the same, and controlling thereby the draft to the chimney and the degree of heat. Extensiolr plate F is guided in suitable manner by rods i on the back plate E, and connects byits chim-4 ney-plate K bent up under a right angle to thechimney. The smoke passes up between damper D and plate K to the chimney, and both together regulate the fire at will. Coal or wood may be burned in this grate, the former in a suitable basket the other with the common andirons. The back plate E rests on the brick wall of the tire-plate, which should not be too high, so as to permit convenient arrangements of the different parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The back extension-plate F with lateral strips h', guide-rods i, and chimney-plate K, as described.
2. The top and bottom extension-plates G having slots a, in connection with damper D and side plates B, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the extensionplate F, lateral strips h', guide-rods t', plate K, plates C having slots a, side plates B, and damper D, as shown and described.
