Description

R. n. MCDONALD.
Fireplace Heater. I
No. 95,030. Y Patented Sept. 21, 1869.
ILFEYERS. PHDTQ.LITMUGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D. t;
nitrd gisten To allan/tom it 'may concern:
I R. D. McDoNALD, OFJERSEY CITY, ANEW JERSEY.
Letters Patmt No. 95,030, dated September 21, 1869.
FIRE-BLAQE'.
Thev Schedule `referred. to inthese Lettera Patent and makinglpart of the same.
Be it known that I',1t.`D. MoDoNALn, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson,"`an'd State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved- Fire-Place Heater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the i same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, forming part cof this specification.
The gure is a'dtail sectional view of my improved heater.
This invention has for its object to furnish an improved open-grate dre-place heater, `which shall be so constructed andarranged as to utilize the heat that usually escapes into the chimney, so as to economize fuel, and obtain the advantages of a stove and open @Fes end It consists in the construction of the heater, as here- I inafter more fully described.
The heater may be made of cast or sheet-metal, las may be desred'or convenient, and of any desired size,
4 according to the size of the room iu which it is to be placed. The grate that supports the fire maybe made and secured in place; in the ordinary manner.
Atthe ends of the grate are formed openings A, leading into the vertical lues B, which extend up at the sides ofthe fire-place, as shown 'in the igure.
Directly over the middle part of the ire is formed another opening, G, leading into the lower horizontal ilue D, into which" open the upper ends of the i'lues B,
and which, at one end, opens into one end of the upper horizontal flue E the other end of which communicates with the chimney-flue F, as shown in the iigure.
By this construction and arrangement of the fines, thel heat will be almost entirely withdrawn from the products of combustion, and radiated into the room by the metallic walls of the said lues, as 'the said products of combustion. are passing through them.
The openings A and Oshould be provided with dampers, so that t-he draught, and consequently the distribution of the heat, may be regulated at will.
When made of cast-metal, the heater may be cast in one or more pieces, as may be desired or convenient.
Upon the top wall ofthe heater shouldbe laid two or morecourses of bricks, to Areceive the mantel, so that the said mantel may not be unduly heated.
Having-.thus described my invention,
What I' claim as ne'w, and desire to secure by Letf ters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the flues- B D E, and openings A C, in a nre-place heater, made of cast or sheet-metal, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
It. D. MCDONALD.
