Description

J. BRAD'FOR D. Fire-Place Damper.
Patented Oct. 8,1872.
Le@ e /39 f f f 1 less.
UNITED STATES IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE DAIVIPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,994., dated October 8, 11'572.
To all'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES BRADFORD, of
Charlotte, county of Mecklenburg, State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Place Damper, of which the following isa specification: v
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a detail sectional view of my improved device taken through the line x x, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view ot' the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for regulating the draft of fire-places, which shall be so constructed and arrangd as to supply the fire-place with air to support combustion from outside the room, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, enabling a room to be kept warm with much less fuel than would be necessary were the air to support combustion taken from within the room; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the hearth, and B the base or bottom of a fire-place. C represents the foundation of the hearth and chimney. In the foundation Gis formed a transverse fine, D,
open at both ends, and from which smallv flues, E, lead up to an air-chamber, F, placed directly beneath the hearth, and which should occupy the space of about two bricks, more or The air-chamber F is covered with a metallic plate, G, which should be so formed as to rise a little above the level of the hearth, and in its vertical forward side near the top is formed an opening through which the air may be allowed to escape.
H is a plate, it-
ting and sliding upon the top of the forward part of the plate G, and the forward edge of which isbent downward, as shown in Fig. l, so as, when the plate H is drawn back, to cover and close the opening through the forward part of the plate G, and when said plate H is pushed forward, to allow the air to escape through said'opening to the fire-place to support combustion, and thus prevent air from being drawn from the room for that purpose, cold air may be prevented from being drawn in through the cracks and openings around the doors and windows of the room. The movement of the plate H is limited by the pins I that confine it to the plate Gr, and that pass through short slots in the ends of the said plate H. This construction of the device prevents any puif ot' air from passing through the flues E and air-chamber F to the fire-place, and prevents any cinders or ashes from fallin g into the air-chamber F or tlues E. The flues D E and the air-chamber F may be made of brick-work or other suitable material.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The ilue D, small flues E, and air-chamber F, arranged in connection with the foundation of a hearth and fire-place, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The platesG H, constructed and arranged in connection with the hearth of a fire-place, and with the airchamber F, iiues E, and iiuc D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
JAs. BRADFORD.
