SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,727, dated April 26, 1887.

.To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, J AMES Cr. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Places; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and t0 letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a Vertical section. Fig. 2 is a front View of the top portion. Fig. 3 is a back view ofthe front plate, and shows a corner of the back plate in position, the rest of the back plate being broken away.
My invention relates to tire-place air-chambers; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter iully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter tothe accompanying drawings, A designates an air-cham ber formed by a front plate, A', and a back plate, A2, joined together.
B is a continuous horizontal air due formed within the air-chamber A by horizontal partitions B, which do not extend entirely across the air-chamber. This air-flue extends from the bottom ofthe airchamber A to the top of the same.
C C, Ste., are inclined air-dues passing over the top ot' the fire, intersecting and having communication with the horizontal continuous air-flue B.
D is a horizontal air-flue located at the top and in front of the top air-tlues, C, intersecting and having communication with the top airiiues, C, and being provided in front with openings F for the lin-al discharge of the heated air into the room.
E is a cold-air inlet located at the bottom of the air-chamber A,and having communication with the outside air and the horizontal continuous air-flue B. The office of this continuous horizontal air-Hue B is to hold the air in its upward passage longer against the heated walls of the air-chamber A, that it may become more thoroughly heated by traveling a greater distance before entering the top air ue, C.
It will be observed that the inner back wall of my tire-place7 is inclined forward from bottoni to top in front of the continuous or zigzag Hue B. By this construction the compartments ofA said flue formed by its shelving are increased in size and holding capacity in regular order from the bottom upward, thereby affording constantly-increasing space for the expansion of heated air to increase the draft.
The universal objection to the air-chambers now in use is, that the air rushes up the chamber so quickly that it has not time to become heated.
In the present construction the air in its upward course is made to pass four times horizontally across the back ofthe air-chamber A bet'ore entering the top air-fines, C, which latter dues may be increased or reduced in number, as may be desired. In some instances I use side air-chambers in connection with the back air-chamber; and when this construction is used the iiues B are extended and include the side air-chambers also.
G are open spaces between the top air-flues, C, for the passage of the heat and smoke into the chimney or smoke-pipe above.
H is the tire-box, and I the ash-pit below. .I is the heat and smoke chimney passage or ilue-above` the top air-dues, C. Within the top horizontal air-Hue, D, is located a sliding damper, D', for regulating the amount of heat passing into the room and for shutting out the cold air and preventingit from entering the room, when desired.
It is obvious that the above construction is applicable to open stoves as well as to tireplaces, and I do so apply it in practice.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The improved lire-place herein described, provided with a double back Wall, the inner of which is inclined forward, the back wall being substantially vertical, as shown, the airinlet, the continuous or zigzag horizontal flue B, the inclined tlues, and horizontal topy flue having discharge-openings, substantially as specified.
