Description

W. C. HAMNER. FIRE PLAGB AND CHIMNEY.
Patented June 5,1883..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM C. HAMNER, OF MORGANFIELD, KENTUCKY.
FlRE-PLACE AND CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,'791, dated June 5, 1883.
Application filed February 10, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HAMNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morganfield, in the county of Union and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Places; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of ,the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a pat of this specification. i
Hy invention relates to the masonry of build ings-such as dwellings, tenement-houses, and the like; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of ash-flues therein, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In grate-fires, as ordinarily employed, the necessity of frequently carrying away the ashes, cinders, &(3., in a coal-scuttle, and the accompanying dust, &c., to the apartment caused by their removal, is both a burden and a nuisance. This invention is designed to obviate both these evils, as well as to prevent fires caused by 'ignition from ash-piles, barrels, &c., and also to obviate the necessity of unsightly and inconvenient accumulation of these substances.
To these ends the invention consists, essentially, in the constructi'on of the masonry of buildings, as fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing s, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a 'vertical section taken through a chimney; Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken through the line'w a of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a vertical section taken through the line y y of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a perspective View of the hearth with the -ash-flue cover removed, and Figs. 5 and 6 perspective views of the ash-exit and its cover. i
Referring to the drawings, A represents a section of a chimney having fire-places a in each story and a draft-fine, B, as shown in dotted lines.
Formed within the masonry of the 'chimney or building, and extending downward from the hearth of each fire-place a, is an ash-fine, C. Each fire-place a has a separate ashfiue, G,
(No model.)
i and vault. Each Vault has a cast-metal or contained ashes from scattering in the vicinity,
and the exit is of proper shape and size to allow the ash-man or garbage-remover to insert a shovel or scoop therein when removing the same, which should be done at regular or stated intervals. By this arrangement it is not nec essary that the ash-man should enter the house at all, and` the ashes may readily be removed without disturbing the inmates.
F represents the hearth having an opening, f, in size and location corresponding with the ash-fine O, said opening being provided with a proper lid or cover, f'. The ashes, when the ash-vaultis closed, fall or are scraped into the opening f and gravitate to the ash-vault, and when the ash-vault is being emptied a cover, f', is placed in position to prevent the draft forcing the ashes into the room. As shown, there are two ash-vaults, and in practice each fire-place will have an ash-fiue leading to an ash-vault below, common to all.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A chimney having fire-places and an ashflue from each leading to an ash-vault below, said ash fiues being distinct from and independent of the chimne -flue and having a cover, f', and the ash-vault formed in the bottom of its chimney having a suitably-covered opening, the fire-place and vault opening on opposite sides of the chimney, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the ash-flue, as described, of the hearth F f, cover f', and the frame D d, and cover E e, all Operating as and for the purposes heroin specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.

fitnessesz JNO. H. WALL, J. J. CONN.
