PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK JOSEPH BLUM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
,ASH-CHUTE FOR- FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,435, dated April 19, 1904. 7 Application filed April 1'7, 1903. Serial No. 153,062. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK JOSEPH BLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Chutes for Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention consists of a rocking chute for use in the doorways of the ash-pits of furnaces, and has for its object the production of means whereby clinkers and ashes drawn out of the fireplace-door will be carried by the chute into the ash-pit.
Heretofore when grates were cleaned of clinkers and ashes through the fireplace-door they have been dropped on the hearth and thence scooped away or into the ash-pit. This causes bad smells and gas in the furnace-room as well as danger of fire from hot ashes and clinkers.
The object of my invention is to remedy this by a device which projects from the ashpit doorway under the fireplace door and will catch ashes and clinkers drawn through the latter and deliver them into the ash-pit.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of a furnace with my device in the ash-pitdoorway. Fig. 2 is avertical section showing the chute closed, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing it open.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the front plate of the furnace, 7 the doorway to the fireplace, and 8 the doorway to the ash-pit.
The device invented by me consists of a plate 9, joined to ends 10, forming a chute which is supported to rock within the ash-pit doorway. The lower edge of the doorway enters a groove between flanges 11 at the lower edge of the plate 9, whereby the chute is held in place. At the rear upper edge of the sides 10 are lugs 12, which when the chute is pulled out engage behind the front plate 6 above the doorway. The chute may be rocked in or out when desired. The plate 9 is preferably made the proper size to fit the doorway, so that when rocked in it closes the same, as indicated in Fig. 2. When rocked out, as in Figs. 1 and 3, it catches the clinkers and ashes as they are drawn from the firedoor and drops the same into the pit. If desired, the chute may be removed by simply lifting it out of place.
It will be seen that this device remedies the objections indicated above. It may be applied to existing furnaces and used to catch live coals which are apt to drop out when the fire is being poked or raked.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a doorway, of a removable rocking chute and door, having flanges at the lower edge thereof fitting over the lower edge of the doorway, and also having stops engaging the doorway and limiting the outward swing.
*In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK JOSEPH BLUM.
