WILLIAM W. JACKSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ASH-TRAP FOR GRATE-FIRES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedrApril 26, 1910.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Serial No. 557,756.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WV. JACK- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Traps for Grate-Fires, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ashtrap constructed according to my invention, showing the movable plate on a level with the frame; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 indicated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view to that of Fig. 1, but showing the movable plate shifted to open the ash receptacle, and simultaneously closing the ash-flue; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 indicated in Fig. 3.
My invention relates to grates and fire places in dwellings and consists of the improved ash-trap, shown in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described and claimed, the device being designed for use as the bottom plate of a fire place and for connecting the ash-flue therewith.
The ash-trap, constructed according to my invention, consists of a frame at, having a central opening I), a chute d, contiguous thereto, and of a plate 6, mounted on arms a, pivoted in the chute, the pivots 0' being set so that the plate 6 will move in an are, indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, and will, in one position, that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, fill the opening in the frame, the whole forming then a bottom plate for the fire place, and, when swung into its other position, that shown in Figs. 3 and 4, close the lower opening of the chute d and form with the sides of the chute, a hopper, or receptacle, into which the ashes, from the grate or fire-place may be dropped or swept. Then by swinging the plate 6 to its original position, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower end of the chute d is again opened, and the ashes, dropped or swept into the receptacle, slide into the ash-flue below. In both of these positions, the plate 6 prevents the blowing of the ashes into the room, where the grate is located, by a back draft from the ash-flue. It will be noted, that simultaneously with the opening of the lower end of chute 03, the opening in the frame a is closed by returning the plate e to its position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and consequently, any back draft from the ash-flue, which would raise the ashes and blow them into the room, is thereby effectively prevented.
For a more convenient operation of the device, the plate 6 is provided with means for manipulating it, preferably a perforated lug e as shown in the drawings. The perforation in the lug facilitates the insertion of a poker or similar implement, for swinging the plate e as required. Instead of this, other means may be provided for swinging the plate 6, to effect the closing of either end of the chute, as explained. Neither arrangement, however, is an essential part of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
The combination with a chute, provided with a. frame contiguous to one end thereof and having a central opening, of arms pivotally mounted in the chute, a plate mounted on said arms and fitted substantially as a whole to the central opening of the frame so as to form with the frame a bottom plate for a fireplace, the arms being so pivoted that the plate may be swung bodily over the lower end of the chute to close the same, thus transforming it into a receptacle, all substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM W. JACKSON.
