W/TNESSES l UNITED sTATnsmPr-ITENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM II. BOLLAND, OIF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR O'Ii ONE-FOURTH TO WILLIAM G. MORRELL, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
PORTABLE GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed September 10, 41908. Serial No. 452,345.
To all whom 'it may] concern.'
Beit known that I, WILLIAM II. BOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Portable Grate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement in fireplace grates of portable character, and has 1n view a grate of the conventional or other design, hinged at one side to swing within and to the outside of the replace opening, in which latter position it is adapted to be lifted from its hinges and removed for emptying or other purposes.
The invention further contem lates a reticulated or perforated cover for tlie grate, which is likewise mounted and serves for supporting articles to be heated; also an ash-pan, and a handle interchangeable with the ashpan and the grate.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a fireplace having my improvements ap y lied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of) the grate when removed from the Iireplace; and Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively like views of the grate cover and the ash-pan.
The design of the grate 5 may be of any usual or other type, it only being necessary that it be provided with a rear wall (5, which, in the present instance, is shown to be made up of a series of bars similar to the front wall. At one side near the front edge the grate is provided with integral perforated ears arranged in vertical alinement, each forming a member of a hinge 7, the opposite members 8 of which are secured to the outer facing of the fireplace and have vertical pins adapted to engage in the apertures of the hinge members carried on the grate, or, if desired the positions of the hinge members may.
be reversed. By thus mounting the grate it is adapted to swing within and to the outside.
of the iire lace opening, and when in this last-name position can be vertically lifted from the hinges and removed for emptying or other purposes, in this vway dispensing with the necessity of first raking the ashes, cinders etc. into the ash-pan before the ashes can be removed.
A cover 9 of reticulated or perforated construction is supported in the same manner as the grate, as shown in Fig. 1, and not only serves to prevent the fire from popping out, but also as means for supporting vessels and other articles to be heated. The especial construction of this cover I have shown consisting of a wire frame sha ed to iit the fireplace above the grate an covered with a wire net. The hinge members of the cover are carried by a vertically-arranged Wire 10 rigid with one corner of the frame, the same being braced at adjacent sides by wires 11. When the cover is swung to an operative position within the fireplace opening it is prevented from sagging under the weight which is placed on it at that end removed from the hinges, by a projection or bracket 12 attached to the side wall ofthe fire lace.
In completing the Iirep ace I make use of an ash-p an 13 which is elevated and su ported slightly above the hearth by brac iets or angle-irons 14, adapting the pan to be easily slid to and from a position under the grate. In order that the grate and the pan may be conveniently carried I provide both with perforations at opposite sides, in which an interchangeable handle 15 is adapted to be easily engaged and disengaged by s ringing its ends apart, as is obvious from 2. In this manner one handle serves for both the grate and ash-pan and does not interfere with the use of either when the same are placed within the fireplace.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a fireplace, a grate, a reticulated cover for the grate having an upright member secured at an outer corner thereof, bracing wires extending from the upper portion of the member to the cover, hinged members arranged at an outer corner of the fireplace, and hinged members carried by said member, seating on the hinged members of the ireplace and vertically displaceable thererom.
2. The combination of a fireplace grate, I name to this speciiication, in the presence of anat a cover for the grate, with hotlh the ecver two subscribing Witnesses. an( grate hinge( at one side of t 1e 1re n ace Tlf l to permit them to swing into and out (if the HLLIAM H' BOLLAND' 5 'fireplace opening independently of each other Vtnesses:
01' in unison. N. B. JENKINS,
In testimony whereof I have signed my M. A. MORRISSY.
