SMOKE-FLUE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,397, dated October 18, 1881. Application filed May 3, 1881. (ModeL) T 0 all whom it may concern Be itknownthatI,CoNs'rANriNn LEE BRA- DY, of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Smoke-Flue, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved self-cleaning metallic smoke-flue; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, taken on the line or w of Fig. 1.

The flue A, which is of sheet orcast iron, and preferably square in cross-section, is intended to take theplace of the brick chimneysin frame houses and to be built in the walls of brick houses, or it may be inserted in the chimneys or smoke-fines of houses already built; and for supporting the flue in place in the wall or chimney I provide it with the arms a a at or near the top of the flue and the arm a near the bottom thereof, which arms may be perl'orated for the reception of the pins, as shown in Fig. 1, for holding the flue firmly against danger of lateral movement. The lower portion of the flue is bent or curved inwardly, so

that the open end (1 thereof is inside of the house, a shortdistance above thefloor, as shown in the drawings, which end is closed by the sliding door (1. The horizontal extension or pipe-connection E of the flue is of such length as to reach through the wall, and is provided with the damper e, which is nearly in line with the front wall of the flue, in which position it serves also to prevent the pipe coming from the stove being inserted too far into the flue. The extension E, when notin use, is closed by the hinged cap F, which fits over the end thereof, and is held in place by a suitable springclamp or similar device.

It will be understood that the flue should be provided with as many pipe-connections E as there are stories to the house, though only one is shown inthe drawings, and from the construction ofthe flue it will also be understood that the line is practically self-cleaning, as the ashes and soot will not adhere to the smooth metal surfaces of the flue, but will fall to the soot-chamber G, which is formed by the flue being extended below the pipe-extension E, from which chamber the same can be easily removed from the inside ofthe house by simply raising the sliding door (1.

Between the stove-pipe extensions E of the different stories the flue may be surrounded with fire-clay sections, if desired, thus avoiding all possible danger of fires from the flue.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. The flue A, constructed to form the sootchamber 0, opening inside of the room, and provided with suitable stove-pipe connections, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The flue A, provided with the arms a a and a, and constructed to form the soot-chamher 0, and having the stove-pipe connections, in combination with the cover F, sliding door (1, and the damper e, substantially as and for the purpose described.
