HERMANN NEEF, OF JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOYHI.
STOVE-HOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,430, dated iiarch 12, 1889.
Application filed April 14, 1888. Serial No. 270,627. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, llERMANN NEEF, of Jetferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Hood, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object the conveyance of the steam, smoke, and disagreeable odors arisin 'u the process of cooking and washing on a stove or range to the chimney or other line, thus preventing the spread of the vapors through the house. I therefore term it the lcitchen-puriiier.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig 2 is a sectional elevation of same through the center of the lines.
A is the top plate of a cooking stove or range; 13, smoke-tine thereof, with horizontal extension 7) extending to ehinmey; C, a coneshaped hood large enough to cover a portion of the top plate, A, of the stove. The upper part of the hood (7 provided with a section of a pipe, (7, and above this is another section of pipe, c, of a larger diameter, within which section 0 slides. Above section 0 is another pipe-section, c, of larger diameter, within which section (1 slides. The upper part of section c" has an elbow, h, and is bent horizontally and forms part of the extension-pipe Z), within which is a damper, f, arranged as shown. Any desired number of such sections may be employed.
Preferably the hood (I will be detachably connected with the pipe-section c by a bayonet-joint, the hood being provided with a short pi pe-sectien, 0", provided with studs engaging L-shaped slots in the lower end of section 0, and the upper end of section 0 may be provided with a semicircular extension, 0, adapted to fit the upper portion. of extension I). YYith this construction the damper f may be dispensed with.
The sections c c c are made telescopic, or, in other words, they slide one within the other. Thus, when it is desired to raise the hood C, the section (7 slides within section 0, and if the hood is raised above the length of section (1, then section 0 slides within section and thus any desired adjustment of the hood (I may be eiitected. The hood is counterbalanced and held in any desired position of adjustment by the weight I) and wire, rope, or chain (Z, which iasses over pulleys e 6 down through the pipe-sections, the extremity of the rope being attached at 1 to the inner surface 01": pipe-section c, as shown in Fig. 2. The pulleys may be attached to the walls of the apartment, as desired.
The outer lower edges of hood C are provided with grooves 72, in each of which a removable wing, E, is carried, the upper end of each wing being bent, into hook form. \Vhen not in use, the wings E occupy the position shown in Fig. 2. g of the wing is inserted in the groove 71, and the lower part of the wing will then project downward and outward from the hood, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, the wings, when thus arranged, forming an enlargement of the hood, so that nearly the whole top of the stove may be covered by the hood should it be desired.
The hood may, when desired, be furnished with wire gage ventilators is, as shown.
The damper f is provided to cut off the connection between the pipe-sections c c c and pipe Z) when the tire is being kindled and the full draft of the chimney is wanted for the smoke-pipe I The damper will also admit of any proportionate division of the chimneydraft between the sections 0 c c and the Smoke pipe, accordingly as it is partially opened and closed.
It for any reason, as a poor chimney-draft, it is not desired to connect the hood 0 with the smoke-flue used for the stove or range, the required hood-connection maybe made with any other fine of the chimney.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The hood 0 being counterbalanced by the weight I), the hood may be readily raised or lowered and set to the desired position above the top of the stove, and. on opening the damper f an upward draft through the hood into the chimney or flue will be maintained, by which all the fumes, vapors, and odors will \Yhen in use, the hook part The hood constructed with edge grooves, 72, in combination with the independent wings E, constructed in hook form at their upper edges, as described, whereby the lower edges of said wings may be supported in the grooves when in open position, and the hooked edges of the wings may hang in the grooves when in closed position, as set forth.
