Description

'PATENTED OCT. 11, 1904.
L. P. CROSWELL. COMBINED HEAT BAFPLE AND DAMPER.
APPLICATION FILED OOT.8. 190s. RENEWED AUG. 26, 1904.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented October 11, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS P. CROSWELL, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,860, dated October 11, 1904. Application filed October 8,1903. Renewed August 26, 1904. Serial No. 222,305. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs P. CRoswELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Heat-Baffle and Damper, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combined heatbaffle and damper attachment for heatingstoves, and has for its primary object the provision of an attachment of the character specified which is susceptible of ready application to the interior of stove-casings of various diameters, as will be more fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter given when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming'a part hereof.
In the drawings the preferable embodiment of the invention is illustrated, whereby the novel details in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the attachment may be apparent.
The figures of the drawings represent, respectively, Figure 1, a perspective view of the attachment previous to its application to a stove, and Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of a stove-casing and the attachment therein.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, A represents the casing of an ordinary heating-stove.
Y B designates a baffle supported in the upper part or dome a of the stove directly above the fire-chamber, said bafiie being of frustoconical formation. The means for supporting the baffle in place comprises the separated arms or brackets C, of angular contour, the depending portions of which are riveted at c to the stove-casing and the inwardly-extending portions of which are adjustably connected to the inclined or flaring wall of the baflie through the instrumentality of slot-and-pin connections 0, the pins being constituted by binding-screws having a threaded engagement with the baffle. The top of the baffle is provided with a collar or flange D, surrounding a circular opening 61? therein, said open ing being normally closed by a damper E. The damper is pivotally supported upon the flange by means of pivots f, the one fitting an aperture in said flange and the other resting in the open-top recess f therein, the last-mentioned pivot being extended for attachment to an operatinghandle F. The handle just referred to is adjustable longitudinally by means of the slot-and-screw connection Gr connecting the flattened end g thereof with an opposing correspondingly-flattened portion 9 of the damper-pivot.
From the construction above defined many advantages are attained. When a direct draft through the stove and the flue H thereof is desired, it is simply necessary to rotate the damper and open the passage through the bafl le normally closed by said damper. However, when greater heat from the stove is wanted said damper is closed, when the products of combustion arising into the baffle will be deflected therefrom downwardly and outwardly into proximity with the wall of the stovecasing, whereby all of the heat generated in the fire-pot will be transmitted through said wall to the exterior, thus utilizing the heretofore waste heat from the central portion of the stove-chamber, which would ordinarily arise directly to the flue and escape therethrough.
Slight structural changes may obviously be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a stove having a tubular body, an attachment of the character described comprising a frusto-conical baffle imperforate save at its outlet-opening at the top thereof, a damper for said outlet-opening, and
adjustable devices for supporting the baffle within the stove with an encircling passage between the outer edge of the said baffle and the interior of the stove-body, said devices each consisting of an angle-bracket, one end thereof being adjustably connected to the frusto-conical baffle whereby the bracket may be moved outwardly and inwardly relative to said baffle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS P. CROSWELL.
