HEATING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,653, dated December 6, 1892.

Application filed March 1, 1888. Serial No. 265,790- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to heaters for burning coal, gas, &c.

It has for its object to carry away the products of combustion in the nature of smoke and gases arising in the fire-chamber without the use of the ordinary smoke-pipe passing from the top or from any upright or side portion thereof, thus concealing from view the stovepipe and economizing space In the room in which the heater is used.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of the heater, a part of the smoke-pipe also being shown-in section, the pipe extending down beneath the base of the heater and below the,

floor and then sidewise into a chimney-flue. Fig. 2 is a top view of the heater.

A is the base of the heater.

B is the outside heater-casing.

O is the inner casing.

D is the door of the ash-box.

E is the grate.

F is the door-opening of the combustionchamber.

G is the lowerpart of the combustion-chamher or fire-pot.

H is the upper part of the combustionchamber or fire-pot, it being a cone-shaped combustion-chamber, serving, also, in the capacity of a smoke-conducting flue, to the upper end of which the first section of the smokepipe proper is attached.

J is the top-bend'section of the smoke- I e. p is the flattened portion of the smoke-pipe, extending downwardly outside of the combustion-chamber and within the casing B, and also preferably within the innercasing O.

L is an elbow-section of the smoke-pipe, connecting at its upper end with the lower end of the flattened section K of the smokepipe just beneath the ash-box and its other end extending beneath the floor, preferably in a horizontal direction, and entering an opening in a wall or chimney, said opening connecting, preferably, with avertical smokeflue.

The heater illustrated is of a character in ordinary use excepting that the smoke-pipe is almost wholly concealed from view by its being bent over at the top of the heater and carried down inside of the casing or casings instead of emerging from its top or from some place of its vertical walls or sides, and after passing beneath the heater bottom is carried through the floor underneath the heater, and then horizontally or otherwise into a flue-opening, the latter connecting ordinarily with an upright or vertical chimneyfiue.

Obviating the use of a pipe where it has usually been employed enhances the appearance of the heater and also economizes space in the room, being less in the way and less obtrusive generally.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A heater having a fire-pot and an outer casing and a smoke-pipe connected with the upper part of the said fire-pot and extending in a downward direction and closely alongside the fire-pot and between the latter and the surrounding casing and to a point beneath the heater, substantially as and for the purpose described.

' 2. A heater having a fire-pot and an outer casing and a smoke-pipe connecting with the fire-pot and extending down in substantially a straight course between the fire=pot and easing beneath the floor and then extended and adapted for connection with a chimneyflue, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.

3. A heater provided with a firepot and an outer and an inner casing and a smoke fine or pipe connecting with the fire-pot and extending down within the casings and beneath the heater and the floor, substantially as and for the purpose described.
